Hi Everyone,

I am very confused on what to do with my career. I am 24 years olld, and I passed my last test in October and am currently working full time as an Accountant II. I am taking online classes so i can get the 150 credit hours so i can apply for licensure.

I eventually want to be a Controller or a CFO of a company. I am confused on the career path. I work in corporate accounting. At my current job I am technically an accountant, but i dont really do accounting. I invoice clients and do some ad hoc reports. Not really actual accounting work.

I am going to start applying for new jobs because there is no room for advancement because we were bought out a couple years ago by a huge company. I don’t know if i want to move over to finance and apply for a Senior Financial Analsyt position or if i should apply for some accounting position at another company. I would prefer to stay out of public accounting but not 100% against it if someone highly recommends it.

Any thoughts or someone with prior experience in a similiar situation on not knowing what to do would be greatly appreciated.

Honestly, what you do at your current position is important for learning but when it comes to the next job, they want to know you're an accountant. I've had the same question. I was in Public for 3 years and now in private as an accountant for the past few months. I asked my recruiter, and she said the best path would be manager somewhere, then controller. From that point with enough experience you become CFO of a smaller company, and eventually work your way to bigger companies.
