Career Dilema – To Treasury or not to Treasury

So recently I interviewed for a treasury position and think I am “the one”. The problem is I think going from accounting to treasury will limit my future career prospects.

Here are my pros of the move:

    Industry I like

    Better Pay (approaching 6 figures)

    Fun atmosphere

    Public company

    Cons:

    Long drive

    Impact on passing CPA

Wanted to get into Big4 after passing exam.

    Limited career path.

I’d love to hear any input or comments on this. I currently work in industry as a senior.

Do what will make you happy. Nothing is worse than being stuck in a job you will hate. They say once someone makes above 75-85k that you stop worrying about the money and then start to care more about the people you are around. Right now I would take a 10 grand pay cut just to get out of this place I work currently, I can't stand it. They know I don't like it and so I am “stuck” here until I leave. I have 2 interviews with big 4 lined up… but I LOVE audit and when I get back in I will never leave. Just find what you enjoy, surround yourself with people you enjoy and that is what will make it worth it in the end. Because 10 grand extra to work with people or at a job you hate… just is not worth it.

Thanks! That's more or less how I feel right now and I'm not worried about the financial gain as much as I am about being around people that are high level. I am willing to give up everything I have right now to get into BIG4. Just curious, have you ever worked for BIG4 before? Are you in industry?

I want to start as an associate to learn from the bottom up, but because I'm a few years out of undergrad, I have to go through the experienced side to try to get in. I'd love to get your input on how you managed to get interviews.

Spur – I have not worked at big 4. But I have been an auditor for 2 year right out of college and then the partners decided they hated each other enough that they dissolved the firm. I had 3 offers from other firms when the firm shut down but decided to go into industry. Now after being in industry I miss audit bad. But that is my personality.

The problem is that years of experience out side of public in industry don't equate to years of experience in public. You best bet is to start applying on their websites as a first year. They put them up right now for their 2014 hiring. But your easiest way to public is to get your CPA and then start applying. Unless you have your CPA you really are not worth much to them because tons of people have accounting degrees and can fill a position. First – get your CPA, second – apply for every audit position you can, and network, network, network. Third – if you have to get in at a smaller firm to get audit experience and then jump to big 4, do it. Experience is the most important thing.

almost 6 figures? unless you are going in big 4 manager+ position you won't be making that much. and you will be working a lot more. so you will have even less time to study.

    objections?

Not really worried about pay as much as experience. I'm actually looking to start as an associate/senior associate. And I don't plan on applying till I'm done with this exam.

@Never_Give_Up1 thanks for the insight. I'm trying to figure out this “how to get into BIG4 after industry” puzzle and I hacking away at it slowly in anticipation of passing the exam so that when I'm done I can begin applying. Again, thanks for your input.
