Corporate Consolidation vs External Reporting

Why is the corporate consolidation and internal reporting function usually separated from the external reporting SEC filings team? I know there usually is a difference between the management and legal rollups for most organizations, but since both of these teams are reporting financial data (albeit for slightly different purposes) wouldn’t it be beneficial for them to be under the same direction?

yeah it would make sense to be under the same team, which my company is. we were separate before but have been slowly emerging as ones so we're one team on the paper but still segregated in terms of responsibilities. some small companies let accounting folks to generate numbers (hence doing the consolidation) while ext reporting does the writing.

If I can do it, you can do it too!
