CPA license and a Raise?

Having nearly finished this beast, I obviously want to be rewarded by my employer for my achievement. Should I ask for a raise once I’m officially licensed? Having a CPA is not something that is required for my position. The flip side is I havent been in this position very long. I was hired on in Dec and I did negotiate a higher salary on the front end. I worked for a private company if that makes a difference.

I probably should have got them to agree to something on the front end of things.

I don't see any harm in asking but from the employers POV it may be hard to justify a raise 4 months into a job for a tremendous accomplishment that is not required for the position. I'd be more inclined to take on additional responsibility and show them something over the next 8 months that warrants a fabulous review.

instead of a raise, maybe a bonus? I dont know of many firms that just give raises unless they are for promotions but most firms I know of, even smaller ones, gives bonuses of some kind for this accomplishment

In my opinion, no. You don't deserve a raise for passing the CPA (and presumably getting a license soon)…

… UNLESS you move into a role that values and requires someone with a CPA or on the CPA track.

Hate to break it to you, but certain companies and certain positions simply don't require someone with a CPA. Unless it's a company that intends to move you within the company in the future (where the license is valued), there's simply no justification for a raise.

I won't say “put your head down and work hard”. That's silly. I will say that you should ask to move into an accounting/tax/internal audit/finance role where having a CPA is desirable and rewarded.
