I am just seeking clarification on this. Does prior experience gained before completing the CPA exams count or it has to be after passing all papers?

Check with your State board, but generally it can be before or after.

In Florida, you can obtain the experience before you sit for the exam.

    REG - 78
    FAR - 79
    AUD - 76
    BEC - 75

I have been on this journey off and on for over 10 years. I think it's about time that I wrap this up.

    AUD - 10/21/16 (75----07/2010 expired)
    FAR - 10/28/16

Well that is not entirely true, fsu girl. Although you can obtain experience first, you must first be eligible to sit for the exam before your experience will count in Florida. So if you are testing through a state with less coursework required to sit you may be in trouble if you want your experience to count from before you took the exam.

    Took final exam 2/25/15.
    Sent in Application 3/12/15.
    Issued License 3/20/15.

Does your 1 year experience generally have to be with the same CPA/firm.

Or can you do say 6 months with John, CPA and then 6 months with Jane, CPA?

I know it varies state by state – I am currently in VA.

Another question regarding the work experience.

My direct supervisor does not have her CPA. If I were to have an arrangement with my boss where I was able to work directly under another supervisor that is licensed (part time), would this count?

Also, would I have to pro-rate the hours?

You don't have to be working under a CPA to gain experience, you job duties need to be sufficient for your state though.

    BEC 87 Feb 14
    REG 84 Apr 14
    FAR 82 Nov 14
    AUD 86 Feb 15

Depends what state you are in, many states require you to work under the direct supervision of an active CPA in order to earn qualifying experience. Some states relax this to allow you to work under a CA (Chartered Accountant) or just have an active CPA sign off on your experience.

This is what the Florida Board of Accountancy says about experience:

“The sequence of the experience is considered immaterial, that is, whether the experience was secured before or after taking the examination, or partly before the examination and partly after the examination, provided the two periods combined equal at least one year.”

It really doesn't say anything about obtaining the experience before eligibility or afterwards. Can you tell me where you got that info from? I'm just curious. What you say sounds familiar though but it's not on the DBPR site.

In VA, your experience just has to be for a year doing accounting or finance. it does NOT have to be under a CPA. I specifically asked about this since all my experience is in private.
