    I am interviewing for a p/t teaching position at the local community college (always had it in the back of my mind that I would teach a class one night a week when I finished this).

    So can anyone tell me how many hours you REALLY put in to teach a class one night for 3 hours when you figure in grading, planning, etc. And I’ve seen that teachers are paid per contract hour. Are the contract hours the hours in the classroom or do they figure for hours spent outside the classroom.

    So excited that I might be going back to the school where I started 8 years ago, only wanting my associates in liberal arts LOL. That took a left turn, I guess!

    I haven't taught but I have thought about it… please let me know what you find out!

    I don't have any experience or anything in teaching, but I've always wanted to teach.

    Right here along with those hoping/planning to teach…

    @mla1169

    Good luck at the interview! I hope you get the job!

    I looked through the thread I had started a short while ago regarding getting a PhD in Accounting to teach…and I didn't read that anyone who posted there actually teaches now, maybe PhDCPA, but not sure…

    Teachers don't get paid for time spent out of the classroom. I'm not a teacher but many family members are. You will probably have to spend at least one hour planning for every hour teaching. And that doesn't count grading or providing help via email/phone.

    Makin, understood thats why I asked if someone with experience would share with me the actual working hours for teaching one class. Not only do you have to spend time planning, but also grading and most schools expect you to make at LEAST as many office hours available outside of class as the number of classroom hours per week (i.e. if you teach a 2 hour class plan on spending min 2 hours per week answering phone calls and responding to emails from students)

    I am thinking that a 2.5 hour class translates to approx 12 hours per week worked. The pay is based on classroom hours so if the adjunct faculty member gets $40 per classroom hour it probably translates to about $10 or $12 per hour worked.

    I'm not teaching my first class until this summer, but I've heard about teaching from some of the older students. Most of the time comes from prepping for the classes. Obviously, the first time prepping for your class will take the longest amount of time, but it gets better after the first time. A friend of mine has taught financial accounting for a couple of years now and it doesn't seem like his prep takes too much time. I think it takes less time too because financial is such a basic class and he gives multiple choice bubble sheet exams. I think the factors that will determine how much time you will need to spend will be the difficulty of the class taught, the numbers of students in the class, and the format of the exams/quizzes you give. Sorry I can't be of more help with specifics because I haven't actually taught yet.

    I don't get the impression that teaching is too much of a burden for anyone. Do you know what class you will be teaching? How many students will be in each class? $40/class hour? Is that what adjuncts typically make? That seems shockingly low to me.

    I thought Intro to Managerial Accounting as a graduate assistant during the Masters program and that wasn't too bad…only about 3 – 4 hours of prep/grading each week, plus another 2 hours of office hours (but I had to be on campus anyway, so it wasn't really a pain). Although when I graduated, I taught my own section of Intro to Financial Accounting during Summer School that met every day and that was a LOT more work. I spent probably upwards of 100 hours planning the course/due dates/obtaining materials/writing the syllabus/putting together the activities in a course materials packet. Once I started teaching, I was teaching the class every day 2 hours per day for 5 weeks, plus I had office hours 3 days a week for an hour (and extra office hours in exam weeks). I spent close to 2 hours a day preparing for my next class/grading things from the previous class and responding to e-mails. But I mean, if you take out the prep time to create the class, once you start teaching (at least for me), it wasn't even 40 hours a week. I think on average, I probably worked 5 hours a day (with travel time) and I got paid $4,000 for that 5 week period in 3 bi-weekly installments. The preparation for the class is what is very time consuming. Once all that work is done, it's a lot easier and more fun. Plus, I'm sure it gets easier with practice.

    Thanks Phd. I'd be teaching Managerial Accounting for the spring semester as adjunct.

    Of course we haven't gotten as far as discussing salary but I've done some research online and it seems to work out to about $1500-$2000 per semester per class taught. (someone actually posted a photo of their $474 check for one month of the semester).

    Not sure the location of the google hits I got, or how old they were.

    Thanks baseball, that is EXACTLY what I was looking for! And a class that met 2 hours a day, 5 days a week? I can't imagine it as a student, much less teaching it! That sounds like a full time job for one course.

    My friend was an adjunct art history teacher at a community college, and she got something like $80 per class hour…but ya, i dont know what that really factored into when you include prep, grading, office hrs, etc.

    I've always thought teaching an accounting class via an online college would be easy…I took a few online accounting courses, and the lectures were all powerpoint presentations, exams were graded automatically by the online classroom portal/program, so i dunno, but it seemed like it would be easy to do in addition to a full time job. I've read that some of those online colleges give their instructors stipends for teaching online courses instead of an hourly rate.

    haha glad I could help…setting the class up is the hardest part, but teaching is an absolute blast. I had a great group of kids and I had so much fun teaching them a subject I love. Somehow I was able to strike the perfect balance between jokester and authority figure. They probably thought I was corny as hell, but it was still awesome! You'll have to let me know how it goes 🙂

    Its going to be weird because I am SURE I will end up teaching some of my son's friends (he graduated high school last June) but I am also sure I will see students my age or even older. 🙂

    @mla1169

    This is definitely not the same as teaching your child's friends, but I once subbed in a high school for a couple of teachers on maternity leave and some of the students' mothers had been in my older sister's class. The students were so excited about that…

    It was a bit weird 🙂

    There's nothing like teaching.

    Well its official! My Managerial Accounting course starts on January 23-May 15. I am torn between thrilled to death and scared out of my mind. I should get my desk copy of my text on Friday, next week I am travelling for work and will have more “down time” than if I was at home taking care of everything. So I've got to write a syllabus (eeks) and start doing some serious planning.

    Anyhoo I know a few other people were curious here so I'll let you know how it goes 🙂
