Exam void?

When I took my break between testlets, I reminded I forgot to turn off my cell phone, so I took my bag from the locker, and put my notes beside me incautiously when I was finding my phone.

Just when I was putting my phone and notes back in to my handbag, the prometric worker showed up and said I shouldn’t review my notes during break. But I didn’t! The prometric worker just didn’t listen, he filed a report finally but let me back.

Will my exam be voided due to the report? Have anyone heard of a similar story before and what was the outcome?

so the worker came out and saw you with your notes directly beside you and you are surprised he filed a report? Honestly the fact that you had your notes out between testlets means it really should be voided. Why wouldnt you just leave your phone in the locker even tho it was on? That being said, i think the best shot that you have of it not being voided is if they look at your progress and maybe if there isnt any real improvement from after you “looked” at your notes they might not void your test, but i dont have any experience so i dont know. next time just leave everything in the locker until you are done

I don't think it's a matter of the Prometric staff not listening, but they have a set of rules that their very jobs depend on and they really don't get much discretion as to whether to apply them or not. Did you let the staff know that you were headed to your locker to shut off your phone? ( the rules say you are to advise them if you are). If so, one of them likely would have escorted/watched you to be sure instead of just walking by a candidate with notes out. The rules say you may not access your notes at all, putting them in or out of a handbag unfortunately is access.

If they let you back in to finish, it's a safe bet that your score will be transmitted.

That doesn't make sense to me– why not look at notes during a break? You can't go back and change anything in previous testlets. It's no different to me than looking at notes before you go in to start testlet #1.

I hope it works out for you, moongraze.

i said before in one other thread about the notes and i think it makes sense. In my center in Brooklyn, NY, the Prometrics worker told me they have up to 300 different types of exam taken in that particular location. So that means 300 different rules, sometimes you can go out during an assigned break, sometimes you can go out whatever time and stop the test/not stop the test, sometimes you have no access to break whatsoever (if the test is like 2 hrs or less i think). Workers there have no idea if you can go back, check the notes and make corrections. Im sure the last thing employees wanna/allowed to do is check everyones exam rules, i am positive they dont even know the one-after-another-testlet rules for the CPA.

OP, just next time be more careful and inform the staff of your actions if anything. Hopefully, your exam went through!

There's a giant sign at sign in that says “Please leave cell phones in your car”. I guess the only thing I bring in is my wallet, sunglasses, car key, and NTS. I understand both points of view. Looking at notes doesn't help for CPA exams, but maybe another exam it would make a difference! Who did he file a report with? Maybe get in contact with them and ask.

Notes could help. Just being able to look over notes in 60 seconds can make a difference. There were times when I forgot a concept that appeared several times in the exam. I always wondered if someone ever hid notes in the bathroom or had someone wait for them in the hallway. I wonder if Prometric's monitoring is only within their office.

Nothing you can do now anyway. Wait to see when your score comes out.

This is definitely considered cheating and if ur test isn't voided the integrity of that prometric is in question. It's too hard to believe that u just happened to have ur notes out while u were checking ur phone from prometrics viewpoint.

I've actually always wondered the rules on this (I'm sure I've read them at some point) I've definitely seen people take breaks to specifically look at notes. and the prometric people see them do it… glad I never assumed it was ok and just tried it! I have seen it at multiple locations though.

i only take a break inbetween testlet 3 and the Sims. my routine use to be go for a walk and eat a garnola bar i was always under the impression there was no time limit because it goes against your own time and i've never had a problem. One time i guess i took a little bit to long of a time and the guy asked where i went so i said i went outside for a walk and appranrlt that was against the rules and it was all this paperwork and calling to see if i could keep testing. they let me test and my score was received. i ended up failing anyway from being flustered after all that but my score was still graded.

One of my accounting professors said that when she took the exam, back in the day, if you had to use the bathroom, the stall door was kept open and someone actually sat there watching you to ensure there was no cheating.

eesh, that's kind of creepy, RedSox. Of course, there might be a camera in the bathroom now, who knows. I try not to think about it when I'm in there.

I'd like to avoid going to the bathroom during the test, but if you gotta go, you gotta go, and I can't test very well if I'm doing the potty dance in my seat.

You should be worried about not being banned from taking the entire exam, you could be lucky if they decide to only void this particular section.
