Failed REG… retake or continue with BEC for early January

I have BEC scheduled for January 3rd. I’m just starting B3 right now using Becker. Should I continue to pursue BEC and take that 1/3/2015 and then move to REG again after busy season, or should I try and jump right back into REG?

    What do y’all think?

Failed REG with a 66 also so obviously no command of the material

I would retake REG first. A 66 is not that far from the 75 you need to pass and you already have a good foundation with the fact that you just took it. Start studying again like you haven't studied for it before and then focus on weak areas after you go through all the material once. You can do it!

I am in the same boat, but I failed FAR and I have been studying Audit for three weeks. I think I am going to continue with Audit, just because it is more fresh now and I am hoping I will pass that one and get one pass.

@Blackhawks–You will get mixed advice on here. Some people will say to move on since you already started studying and have a test date for BEC. I always think sticking with one exam until you pass is the way to go. It's personal preference. I like knowing that I just studied something and may still remember some of it as I go through the second time to ease the pain of the retake, but you may be tired of studying it and want to move on to something else. Good luck with whichever way you decide to go!

@CPAMommyof3 your AUD and REG bouncebacks are quite impressive!

From personal experience, I would recommend sticking with REG material. I was in a similar position where I failed with a 61, but I was able to bump my score up to a 75 by just focusing on SIMs and journal entries (primarily tax items obviously). Given that you only have about 3-4 weeks it may make more sense.

I would carefully consider whether or not you can achieve a desirable amount of study time with entirely new material in such a small window. Either way, best of luck!

Thanks Blackhawks. If I had studied the first time the way I studied for the retakes I may have not had to retake any. Oh well. What's done is done. You can do this! Did you decide what you are going to take?

At the moment I'm still debating it. The latest I would be able to take REG would be January 10th. I'm not sure if studying from December 14th until then will suffice for enough time in order to pass (starting from scratch). Plus my BEC NTS will expire in March, so it would be difficult to take it during busy season.

    Decisions.. decisions…

Edit: I'm going to stick with BEC that I have scheduled in January. I feel like I need a little mix up of material and BEC is doing the job so far. Jumping right back into REG I'll be inclined to “breeze” through material and might have even remembered some of the MCQs. REG retake next year after busy season is the plan.

I think you made a good choice based on the fact that you have to take it by 01/10. Bec is more manageable in that time frame than REG is. Good luck on BEC!

Mama- I failed Reg with a 66. I knew I did horrible on the SIMS but I was quit surprised when I did not do as good as I thought on the MCQs. I noticed that you made a 69 on your first crack at REG. What did you do differently to get your passing score this time around? I really need for this to be my last exam because I am sooooo sick of this darn thing.

Hey Bcarmi! I posted this on the score release thread for someone else, but I think it applies for anyone retaking REG. This is what I did for my retake.

Start from scratch like you didn't just take it. I had to read the book for my REG retake, but I only read the tax chapters and skimmed the blaw sections that I was weak on after I started quizzing. I used the Wiley book. I read each section and stopped to answer the book MCQ. I didn't do any SIMS from the book. I went through the entire tax section of the book that way then I jumped to the Ninja MCQ. If I got it wrong I made notes on it. Go to the Q4 REG thread and look at our quizzing. It should help too. The most important thing is to make sure you are devoting enough time on your weak areas and not repeating the strong areas just to build your confidence. That was the biggest mistake I made when I failed REG in Q3. I didn't pound the weak areas until I understood them. I suggest going through the test bank in sections until you get through all the questions once, then move on to the next section instead of doing a bunch of random quiz sets. Focusing on one section at a time while you are doing the test bank MCQ helps reinforce the concepts over and over until you have a better understanding of them. If you start studying now you could be ready in the middle of January because you already have a good foundation with just having taken it. I practiced SIMS and I really utilized the study thread. When I didn't understand something I posted about it and others helped me understand it. I've never done my own taxes and I don't do taxes for my company. I only took one tax class in college. I had ZERO experience before this and I passed. You can too!! I jumped 18 points so don't let your score discourage you at all. Come back with a vengeance!!

Well I found out my time extension would be until January 18th now (vs. January 9th). So that definitely swayed my decision. Especially considering no work all around the holidays and down time until busy season begins.

    Hmmmm

Thanks Mama! I am using Becker but I am going to get NINJA MCQs so that I have fresh questions. I have the NINJA Audio and notes. I am going to start on Monday, which is after my birthday weekend, and hit the pavement running.
