Financial Modeling – anyone with experience?

I have worked in public accounting for 6 years.. I do not have any direct “financial modeling” experience, however, as auditors we are constantly looking at our clients cash flows/budgets/understanding the inputs/outputs, and overall just getting comfortable to ensure our audit procedures on the relevant account/cycle are sufficient. There was a lot of financial modeling in BEC as well, specifically in B3 for those of you that used Becker..

I am now in the market and interviewing for more finance orientated positions, ones that involve more planning/budgeting/capital decision making, etc. A common thing I have been asked is “what is your experience with financial modeling”.

To date, I respond similar to what I mentioned above.. but for those of you have these types of jobs already, what in the heck is the best answer and/or what is financial modeling? I mean none of my clients have had someone that sits there and does “modeling” all day. Capital decision issues come up all the time, budgets are usually completed 3-6 months in advance/updated as needed, etc.

Any advice? Also, has anyone ever took a good training, whether it be online or an actual week/weekend seminar that is specific to financial modeling/corporate finance??
