I also forgot to mention my employer basically fired me after being notified of my intent to leave in two weeks. It basically went like this:

    (Knock knock)

Me: “Excuse me Brian (fake name) do you have a moment?”

Brian: “Yeah sure. Have a seat…. What’s going on?”

Me: “Well I just wanted to respectfully give you a two week notice of my intent to leave. Although I enjoy being employed here and really appreciate the opportunities provided, I just don’t feel like I am the best person for this job.

(Brian sits upright in his chair with a concerned look)

Brian: “Go on,” he says impatiently with his left index finger to his temple.

Me: “I just feel that I am having a difficult time understanding the accounting work here and do not feel that my degree and experience in which I was hired for, is applicable to your dealer specific accounting system. This is evidenced by the accounting manager’s growing impatience and frustration with me with the amount of questions I ask regarding work assigned.”

Brian: “Well have you discussed this with her before just deciding to quit?”

Me: “Oh yes absolutely on numerous occasions. I believe that she had a high amount of expectation for me when I became a full time employee. My belief is that she expected me to be able to take over a majority of her responsibilities to alleviate some of her stress and workload. However, the time frame of her expectations seem a bit unrealistic to meet for someone like me with very little to no prior dealership experience. Approximately 90 days to be exact in comparison to her 20+ years. I honestly just feel that you all would better off with a much more qualified candidate. That is why I am giving you my notice.”

(I hand him my letter of resignation which he brushes off)

Brian: Well honestly, I don’t do the whole two week notice thing. If you’re going to quit, then you can just leave. You don’t need to remain here.”

(He sits up and motions toward the door)

Brian continues: “If you need a reference or anything like that then that is fine. But, we can cut ties here. Thank you!

(He extends a courteous “handshake” before closing the door behind me)

Me: “Well thank you again for the opportunity”.

One day I will face that exam.
