Should I stay or leave?

    Hey guys

I was told today that my performance is not great and that I won’t be promoted. I’ve been at my firm close to a year, and this is my second job out of college. I’ve been told at both of my jobs I just “don’t get it”. I’m still a staff.

do I have any real chance of *not* being let go at this point?

Should I look for a new job despite never having worked at the same place for more than a year? I don’t want to jump ship if there’s a remote possibility I can make things work out. Although I’m not sure that’s realistic at this point.

I honestly dont know what my problem is.

    I feel terrible.

I think you should be looking for something else but not “anything else” at this point. It could take a while to find something that appeals to you and vice versa but probably a good time to start putting feelers out.

If you are in your early 20 to mid 20's. Which it sounds like maybe you are. I would worry more about getting some experience and passing the exams as opposed to being promoted. Then in a few years you will have more experience, maturity, and have passed the CPA exam. You will then be in a great position to land the position you are looking for. I know that's easier said that done at a young age, but if I could do things over that's exactly what I would have done at that age. You can't control your age. As you age – you will gain more respect. Right now you can control building your skill set. Try to take the emotion out of it and set a game plan for how to obtain your goals.

Objectively, try to identify what you think they see as negatives…pick the 3 biggies and get medieval on them and fix it…or at least try really hard for 90 days.

Jeff is right. You might also consider seeking out a mentor with your current employer. If your boss really sees you trying your best to learn and improve, they will most likely contribute to your success to the best of their ability. On the other hand, if they see you continuously screwing up and think you just don't care enough to learn, then you're toast.

LOL, schedule a meeting with upper management and turn the tables on them. Tell them it is they who “don't get it.”

Make sure to yell at them, bang the table, and throw a good tantrum, and insist they submit their resignations asap.

Ask that the board make you CEO.

Then be prepared to explain what it is the company “does not get.”

does your company have a mentoring program in place?
what kind of training and feedback are you getting?

I've been promoted from Staff to Senior to Supervisor since joining my CPA firm in Sep 2013. I graduated college later in life (34), worked in public 2 years, then went to industry for the next 8 years, and am now back in public. I've passed 3 parts.

currently, part of my duties include mentoring staff and being mentored by a manager in my department.

when I review work, I give detailed feedback – both positive and negative. My firm is a little different in that hardly anyone EVER gets fired. We do have some turnover, but I think most of that is driven by the people leaving wanting something else – fewer hours, more money (industry in my area is usually higher wages than public), chance at having a CFO or some other such title.

if you are not getting specific feedback, that's a problem IMHO.

I'm in charge of quarterly payroll tax returns at my firm. I have 14 staff and seniors who prepare the quarterlies, that I review. Most of them do not “love payroll”. Payroll is not their thing. I give detailed feedback, including offering to sit with the staff and walk through the process with them. My goal, and my firms' goal, is to have a team of people who can all prepare the finished quality product that we want our name on. If you are only getting feedback of “you're not getting it”. without any details, IMHO they aren't interested in keeping you and developing your skill set.

Early in my career I was at a very large regional firm and working on my degree. I worked in the small business services group mostly doing monthly bookkeeping & some sales/payroll tax returns. They told me I was a square peg trying to fit in a round hole. I was bored out of my mind at that job. In that place they pigeon holed people. One guy did nothing but partnership returns day in & day out. I was ultimately laid off (bottom of the seniority list and customers made a mass departure when they raised fees.)
I landed in a small firm where I was in charge of everything for my clients. I excelled there for 3 years while I finished my bachelor's & master's degrees (MTAX.) I left for more money than he could pay and hated the next job (same as the first.) Then I went to industry at a start up where I've been for 10 years. I came in as the first and only accountant/administrative staff in a company of 15 other people. Now we're 350 people, I have a staff of 7 and I'm the Controller working on a promotion to CFO when my boss gets the VP promotion.
You may be a square peg like me that just needs to find the spot that works best for you.
