Government jobs

I have a chance at a couple government positions that pay decently because I have a bachelors already. Would I be depriving myself by not doing PA? I hear government positions are hard to come by even for CPAs so I feel like I would be letting a valuable opportunity go if I turn down a position. Did anyone here pass up a government job for PA and how do you feel about it? I just started a Macc program and am looking at either tax or government. I’m doing the Macc because it is free for me not because I desperately want to do PA but the school really sells that to us.

My advice would be to know exactly what it is you're getting into. How confident are you that the job itself will be mentally challenging and satisfying? I started in the government sector right out of college. The fringe benefits were fantastic, there is no denying that. But after 2 years I realized I was just doing the same thing month to month to month and I absolutely hated it.

I moved to public accounting, and I freaking love it. I've learned more in a year than I could possibly imagine and am constantly challenged and working on something new every day. Steep drop in benefits, but in my opinion I made the right choice.

Everyone is different but I would make sure that the job you are considering will provide opportunities for growth and learning so you won't be just sitting a desk day in and day out wanting to off your self.

Now what the hell do I do?

I started in Muni Gov't right out of college and am now a Finance Director in a town of about 10,000. Benefits and pay are great (should be 6 figures within 2 years), but totally agree on not being challenged intellectually.

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to go to public, but realistically I can't afford the pay cut to start fresh again. Stuck in the grind…
