I haven’t had too much success in a job search but that is ok. I’ve gone to staffing companies and applied to numerous companies on indeed. I live in a rather large metropolitan area with over a million people so there has to be someone that will hire me. I’m 34 and a non traditional student so maybe that is my disadvantage. I was thinking about just googling local cap firms and calling them. Trying to think outside the box here. Has anybody been successful doing that? Any suggestions on the approach and what to say? Thanks NINJAs!

You can google for local cap firms, but you more than likely won't find anything except for stores that sell hats.

LinkedIn is a much better resource. Contacting recruiters through email is much less intrusive. Also, some states, like California, have a very good CPA society that has tons of networking events. I wouldn't suggest cold calling unless it is to a small firm that wouldn't utilize the above frequently.

Almost always from my phone... please excuse my typos!

Cold calling will get you a receptionist at the vast majority of firms. They will give you a cookie cutter response like “please go to company.com/careers and apply to the job you are interested in and we will get back to you.

LinkedIn and finding the recruiters on a campus are your best bets.
