Hiring Season

Hello all. I am currently looking for a position in public accounting and I have heard that hiring usually picks up in September-October. Is this correct? I have no experience in public accounting, so I am looking for an entry level position, preferably in a small firm (no B4 in area I live, only regional firms). The thought of still being around at my current job for another tax season makes me physically ill, so I am pretty anxious to find something else. Any insight is appreciated!

My firm started interviewing for staff positions about 2 weeks ago, so anytime now is fair game I think until October.

Well, the hiring starts to pick up steam in Oct/Nov, as mid to small size firm will want to staff people for the upcoming busy season.

I was lucky, i interviewed in january of last year and started right away during busy season. I guess people still leave in early january, when they realize that damm, i dont want to put one more busy season, so watch out till mid january or so there will be hiring.

    Good luck.

My understanding is that you can leave a firm in December/January exactly once. It is apparently bad form and heavily frowned upon in the industry.

How long does busy season exactly last? I always assumed it as the time frame of Jan-April.

rfc – I've never heard that. I think the only rule is two weeks notice. If you leave for a better opportunity, give your two weeks, I dont think long term it's going to negatively affect you.

From what I know big 4 do their hiring in the January period, because I was looking to intern after finishing school which was in August 2012 and the internship office told me all the big 4 events are mainly in the Winter before tax season

CPA soon, definitely not looking for B4. The closest Big 4 office is a two hour commute for me.

Busy seasons are usually from jan- march. cause for the excelerated filers SEC has given 90 days to file their 10-K , audited ofcourse, so most of the companys have dec31st year end, so busy season is for 90 days Jan-March.

but it varies from firm to firm, some busy season goes till may, hours slow down after march though

Lindrobe, to answer your question, yes I believe things may pick up after the summer. People wont be on vacation as much and they will be looking to fill positions for the upcoming busy season. Good luck with your search!

Busy season usually also includes tax, not just audit, so it goes from January through mid-April. Then tax has another busy season in September and October for the extended returns.

We haven't started hiring at our firm yet, but the planning is happening, and hiring will start soon.

Thanks for answering my question, guys. Didn't mean to hijack the thread, but knowing busy season for firms generally will give you an idea when to start putting in apps. So if you don't get anything this round during fall, you still have winter, and even early spring to squeeze in before ‘official' hiring season

Thanks for the insight everyone! I just looked at Crowe's website and they just added a whole bunch of new entry level positions today!
