How did you prepare for the written portion of BEC?

I’m using Becker and the homework for the written portion just kind of throw them at you, and there’s some advice in the beginning of the text on how to properly format. But what did you do to make sure you were prepared for that part of the exam?

I took the advice of everyone at my firm who had taken before me and studied for a total of 2 hours for the written portion, and it was great. Learn how to get points – make sure you use the words that they've put in the question in your answer, don't abbreviate anything, make sure your spelling and grammar are on point and you format your response correctly. I read through the becker tips the day before my exam and read what people describe on here by searching for different threads. I can promise that on two of them my answers had no conceptual merit in the response, I repeated the question in my answer and formatted everything the way becker says to, i.e.:

“Please write a memo to your manager explaining why using the effective interest method is appropriate for reporting bonds.”

“The purpose of this memo is to explain why it is appropriate to use the effective interest method in bond reporting.”

I wrote out a handful of practice responses in becker the day before my exam just to get used to thinking of how to properly format and to make sure that I would be okay on time. If you struggle with writing things out I'd recommend maybe incorporating a little further into your study time.

    BEC 7/3/14 - 79
FAR 8/30/14 - 64, 85 (used Becker and Ninja MCQ)
    AUD 10/3/14 - 82
    REG 11/25/14 - 85

I hope it helps! I know it meant the world to me to save all the time worrying, studying and stressing over the written portion.

I also just asked this question. I gather a lot of persons suggest repeating the questions and using the words used in the question. But what if the question asks about regulations or specific taxes, I assume I can't just repeat the words right?

I put in about 5 minutes into reading the general requirements (e.g., don't use bullet points, etc.). Other than that, I just winged it. I can't say this will work for everyone, but it worked for me. Trust me when I say this: do the MCQs. Do a ton of them. Know your stuff. Don't sweat the written portion, because as long as you know your stuff, and you know how to write professionally, you'll be fine.

I remembered the format of the memo, and instead of writing all the essays, I speak to myself. It saves a lot of time.

I wrote out the essays in the practice exams so I know how long I would take on them.

@Angelique90242 as for specific questions, you can never fully prepare for all scenarios.

The essays are not graded on the contents. It weights more on your ability to construct professional documents.

The good news is, these essays are only 15% of the total score.
