I am watching the Oscars (Seth Mcfarlane is the man!) right now but feeling guilty about not studying…and i have attention deficit disorder. Do folks ever study while watching television? What’s a good strategy for casual, downtime studying?

    Silly question – I know šŸ™‚

Maybe mute the commercials and quiz yourself using flash cards in 3-5 minute increments?

I can't study and watch TV. If there is something I want to watch like the Oscars I set a goal and if I meet te goal I reward myself with a break to watch.

    Finally done!

This is my 2nd attempt at the exam, I had two parts passed (failed many) and I stupidly quit, big mistake. Now I'm back and with a vengeance!

    Exactly candothis!

Gettingacpa, studying for this is intense and can't ever be done “casually” (in fact I didn't get the chance to watch any .tv while I was studying at all)

If you're concerned about the ADD and studying google the “pomodoro method” for suggestions of how to stay focused for certain intervals of time.

Ok – I agree. No more television! I will look up the Pomodoro method. Thanks!

I thought OP was saying he will be watching tv no matter what, and feels guilty about it. So he wants to study some too and not feel so bad.

I'm with you all though, I don't watch t.v. while studying. I have probably watched 3 hours of television in the last 2 months. If I want need to take a break, I take a break. I don't try to halfway study.

    If I'm studying, I study. No t.v. šŸ™‚

I study with the TV on occasionally, but usually with nothing too exciting. I like having the background noise, it actually helps calm my nerves. When there is no noise, I feel like every little bump or creak of the house distracts me.

What's a TV? I vaguely remember that the black flat box thing in my living room could provide meaningless and mindless entertainment, but I haven't witnessed it lately!

@MCLKT – I mean after 4-6 hours of studying, what should I do? I feel like I can't study anymore, and I watch television for a break, but I still feel guilty. I think I have more time to study than others though – my wife is in law school (gives me more time to study), I don't have kids, and I work from home a lot (so there is a lot of time to study during the day). If I put in 4-8 hours in a day, I should just relax at night and watch tv, right? I have given myself an entire year total to take all 4 parts….

I can't read or do lectures while watching TV but I do MCQs while occasionally looking up at the TV all the time

It is certainly not for everyone–especially if you are actively watching.

I keep the TV at a low volume so that I have some background noise. I usually like studying and working with background noise–not sure why but it's always worked for me. I work from home one day a week and keep my TV on HGTV all day as background noise…and then during lunch I'll sit on my couch and actively watch for a little bit.

My favorite thing to do back in college was to watch my Spanish soap operas while doing homework. šŸ™‚

Oh–another thing to consider if you like background noise is using “white noise”. There are several websites and phone apps out there with great “white noise” features.

I actually listen to classical music on Pandora, or even jazz. It serves nicely as “white noise” since no one is singing and I can keep it at a low volume.

Mute the commercials, tell yourself you're going to do 5 multiple choice questions per commercial break.

Occasionally – if necessary – I study with my two young daughters running around the house and watching television. I attempt to get more of the in-depth stuff out of the way when I am by myself, and then do multiple choice questions or review topics when I have potential distractions around.

I have tried on a couple of occasions to go back and forth between studying and watching something in the evening, but that never worked out.
