Hi guys,
Since I graduated there is no reason for me to wake up before 10 am, yes, I wake up at 10 am 🙁 – I am such a lazy person and would rather stay on my king size bed instead of getting up..
I want to wake up earlier but can’t seem to be motivated. Can you share your ways to force yourself to wake up early??

Are you sleeping a ridiculous amount, laying in bed a ridiculous amount, or simply on a later sleep schedule? My partner often goes to bed at 6am so doesn't get up till 2pm, but still sleeps a normal-ish 8 hours, so I wouldn't consider that lazy. However, if you're going to bed at, say, 9pm every day, then staying in bed till 10am, I'd be concerned that you have a health problem (mental, physical, or a combination).
If you're late-to-bed-late-to-rise, then waking up early is simply a matter resetting your sleep schedule (if you're not an insomniac or anything like that). Make yourself go to bed at the same time (at least 8 hours before you plan to get up) and make yourself get up at 6:30 every day for a couple weeks and you should adjust. Actually getting up at that time till you adjust comes down to nothing more or less than willpower. Setting multiple alarms may help, but ultimately you have to decide your body's not going to beat you.
However, if you are sleeping a lot and that is the problem, please investigate potential health concerns before forcing yourself to sleep less. If your body is needing the sleep, then reducing it could exaggerate any health problems that currently exist and make you worse off than when sleeping more.
June 5, 2015 at 11:59 am #671028jbarwickMemberI had a morning paper route in high school so I was up at 5:35am every morning for 4 years, so I have been an early riser ever since. I currently work the 8-5 work schedule so I wake up at 5:50am and go to bed at 10pm. 8 hours of sleep is enough for anyone unless you need some extra due to a stressful or hardworking day.
So you just graduated and sleep in. The good news is that at some point you will get a job and have to adjust even if it is not the usual 8-5. So now you need a reason to get up. Do you have a job lined up? If not, force yourself to wake up at 7am, get some breakfast, then start looking for a job at 8am every day.

Far-78 1x easiest sectionJune 5, 2015 at 1:10 pm #671031y_u_no_passParticipantI will say that 8 hours is not necessarily enough for anyone and 7 is really enough for some. Most adults need somewhere from 7-9 hours but anywhere from 6-10 could be normal. https://sleepfoundation.org/how-sleep-works/how-much-sleep-do-we-really-need
It depends on the person. I function best if I consistently get about 9 hours. But that is hard to do and I usually get 7-8 on weeknights then make up for it on the weekends sleeping 10-12 hours.
To the OP: I agree with many of the others, you really need to go to bed earlier. Try to be in bed by 11 every night then make it a little earlier. Also move your wake up time gradually. I think 6:30 may be a little early to wake up. Maybe aim for 8 or something as that seems more realistic especially if you aren't working right now.

Usually, my body naturally wakes up around 6:15, but I always lay back down for that extra 15-30 minutes of “leave me alone, I don't wanna be responsible today” time. Then I'm ambushed with my alarm clock going off every five minutes until eventually I'm fully awake and out of bed, which usually involves a lot of grumbling and cursing. Obviously, I am not a morning person either.
Anyway, I agree with a lot of the others, going to bed earlier is a must, especially when you're heading into a career that requires you to be alert and focused. If you've had adequate sleep, the a.m. grumbling and cursing will be minimized. And eventually you'll get used to it and your body may naturally wake up around the same time every morning, even on weekends, which is super annoying. Adjust your sleep schedule and find something to do in the mornings to keep yourself motivated until you have a job. Using that extra time to look for a job isn't a bad idea either, especially if you need to meet the experience requirement for certification.
Best of luck to you!

June 5, 2015 at 2:14 pm #671034jyoung117ParticipantMy suggestion is when you wake up, walk to the kitchen, start a pot of coffee, take a shower, drink said coffee.
Don't take naps because you won't be able to sleep at night and will sleep in longer because of it. Once you are on that schedule for a week or two your body will adjust. After I graduated and started my job search which lasted 6 months I was going to sleep late and waking up really late like go to sleep at 6 am and waking up at 2 pm. Now that I am on a routine of getting up early I can't sleep past 730 am even if I wanted to. Waking up at 9 am is sleeping in for me.
Hope it helps.
I took my first exam in AUG 2013, so glad they have access until you pass material updatesAUD - 56, 59, 65, 74, 62, 69, 70, 74, 70, 74, 81

June 5, 2015 at 3:10 pm #671040ZulyParticipant@Another85 this post almost sounds comical…sorry but I wish I could wake up at 6:30am to study. Since I start work at 7am I have to get up at 4 or 4:30am just to get an hour to 1.5 hours of studying done and on weekends I sleep into 6am. The only suggestion that I can make is go to sleep at a decent time and make sure you get about 7 to 8 hours of sleep so it doesn't seem like a drag. You just have to make it a priority, that's all. Some days will be easier than others and some not…I usually struggle on the 4th day of waking up this early so I give myself a break and wake up at 5am, lol. I'm sure you can do it. 😉
P.S. this is also coming from a person who loves to sleep…back when I didn't have my son I used to wake up as late as you on weekends so I am a testament that it can be done.
