Well, everyone's mind and body work a little different. The general rule is to get as much sleep as you reasonably can, with 7.5-8 hours being optimal. Many people can “get by” with 5 hours or less. Others can't hardly function unless they've had at least 7-8. That's something only you can figure out. You can continue with your 5 hours, but you should monitor your health and level of focus very carefully. If it starts to decline, I'd change it up quickly. Also, beware of stimulants. Too many people become highly dependent on coffee, red bull, etc… and spend the rest of their lives as slaves to caffeine.

Weekdays I probably average about 5 hours of sleep. Weekends I sleep close to 8.

The amount of sleep a body needs is different for everyone. Listen to your body.

Err on the side of more rather than less. We tend to underestimate the benefit of sleep versus stuffing more information down our throats. Think of it as whether as a general you would add troops to your army, or if you would rather spend time training (in this metaphor=sleep) your existing troops in more advanced methods. Ideally, both, but you have to find the optimal mix. For each person this mix will be different.
