How many times can I take one section of the CPA exam with one NTS?

Hi everyone. I’m having trouble understanding the NTS and the rules regarding how many times I can take an exam with one NTS. Here are the facts:

-I received my NTS in January for AUD, BEC, and REG

-I took (and passed) REG in January

-I took (and failed) AUD in February

-I am currently scheduled for BEC in May

-I’m trying to sign up for AUD again but I am getting an error on the prometric website that says my section ID # is invalid

It says on the NASBA website that “You are only allowed to sit for each section of the examination one time per testing window. If you have already taken the examination in the current testing window, your new NTS will be issued for the first day of the next testing window.” I interpreted this as meaning that I could use my NTS to take one section (AUD) once in the first testing window (Jan or Feb) and once in the second testing window (April or May). Did I misinterpret this? I emailed the people at NASBA and they said I can only sit for a section that is on my NTS once. Does this mean I have to re-apply (and pay those ridiculous fees) again for AUD?

Thanks in advance for the help!

One per test pass of fail. But you can always keep on trying to see what happens.

    FAR-84
    AUD-
    REG-
    BEC-

1 – You can only take each exam once per window (ex. FAR once between 1/1-2/28).

2 – One NTS per exam. In your example, you need to register again to retake any section (one or multiple). Since you failed AUD…guessing you plan to retake in July??… I would go ahead and register to get another NTS for AUD and FAR.

Hopefully you will pass BEC in May, but you won't know until late May/early June. In the mean time, it would probably be best to plan for retaking AUD and also have the option to take FAR soon as well.

Btw, you passed REG. Congrats!! Chances are, if you prepare adequately then you should be fine on BEC. AUD is just one weird and tricky exam. It's much more conceptual and that can be difficult for some numbers people (I'm one of the numbers people that struggles with a bunch of concepts).

Short answer: No retakes of the SAME EXAM on the SAME NTS.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the responses guys! They've been very helpful!

One more question though – if I reapply for AUD now, can I still take it later this month or early next month before the next “off” month (June) starts? I'd like to knock these last two exams out so I can finish this exam in under a year. Or do I have to wait until my NTS expires, which is in June.

It depends on how soon you get your NTS back and if there are any seats in the testing centers. To be honest, I never tried to schedule an exam very soon after actually getting an NTS, so there may be a minimum time frame (5 days after issuance of NTS, or something like that), but I really don't know.

I would not plan on it though, NTS usually takes at least a few weeks. You wouldn't want to plan on taking an exam early and study really hard for the retake only to have your NTS arrive late and wreck your plans.

It depends on the state as to how quickly you get your NTS. I get mine through email within 48 hours. I'm in Florida. You could still take it in May assuming there are seats left.
