I recently moved to Indianapolis, IN from Canada. I have been at home looking for work and there is absolutely nothing out there and noone is willing to hire without experience. I have gotten a Masters of Accountancy which is off no help without experience.

On the other hand i have been trying to start studying since i have way too much time on my hands. I cant set an exam date just yet because i am getting my transcript evaluated and all that stuff before i can even sign up for CPA exams. SO i would really appreciate if i can get tips on how to study just to get a head start.. what would be a good topic to start off with.. i have some material as in the flash cards and other cpa review materials..

I would also really appreciate tips on how to land a job with an accounting firm. It has been very stressful looking for a job.

Well, you might have to take an entry level job right now since you don't have any experience. Try small firms in the area or temp agencies to get a foot in the door.

While looking for work, I would go ahead and get started studying. The sooner you pass this exam the less you will have to compete with. This exam will take up your time so I would start with FAR (the roughest of them all) and go from there. As far as materials, go with something simple and based on your learning style. Most courses offer bells and whistles, but you know best how you learn.

    It begins with a 75

CPAexcel isn't bad, jeff regularly runs discounts too.

Since you have some time, you can do trials on 2 or 3 major ones (becker, CPAEXCEL, bisk etc), and run though a lesson set with each and see how you like the teacher and layout.

Buy the one you like, and start chugging through lessons, your paperwork will all come together and you can then schedule your first exam. FAR is pretty good to start with, I started with Reg due to a class I was taking, passed, but am now struggling with FAR after failing it once.

    REG- (1) 76
    FAR- (2) 64, (5)74, (7)83 (Over achiever!)
    AUD- (3) 70, (4) 75
    BEC- (6) 75

Indy is pretty big, have you looked at the other areas around Indy like Carmel, Avon, castleton, etc. I visit there often and I'm always surprised at the population and the number of companies that are located there.

You can start with the topic you are most comfortable with to get your confidence level up OR start with FAR since it is the most time consuming topic 🙂

I would also print out a calendar and set goals for what you need to accomplish each day/week

    BEC - 80 (10/27/2010)
    REG - 82 (11/30/2010)
    FAR - 75 (04/01/2011)
    AUD - 82 (05/27/2011)
    CA Ethic - 90 (12/15/2013) * I am such a procrastinator

FAR is generally the most time consuming, and it may be the most difficult to handle while working at the same time. So I'd start with FAR. Plus, the info in FAR will help with taking AUD.

Work on making your resume and cover letter look professional and start applying for positions.

I'm in a similar situation except that I'm in a very small town. I've applied and interviewed for several entry-level positions in the past, but they always hire the person with a little bit of experience over me. It's a catch 22. You need a job for experience, but you need experience to get a job. I know it's frustrating. Just start somewhere and chase after what you want.
