Yesterday I interviewed with a firm in Northern Virginia and i felt like i did really well. The conversation had great flow and the partner laughed at my jokes to break the ice. I got positive feedback as I was leaving. When I sent my thank you email afterwards, I got a response from the partner that I met. I’m not sure if im thinking too much into it but normally people don’t respond back to your thank you emails unless they are interested. If this is true, im so excited to work there. Has anyone had someone respond to their thank you email and then actually got the job?

I also interviewed yesterday with a public accounting firm, sent a thank you letter to the manager and the 2 senior accountants that grilled me. The manager responded back with a thank you, I also can't tell if its a positive sign.

One of the snr accountants also checked my LinkedIn profile twice between today and yesterday.

For what it's worth, for two different internship offers I received and the two job offers I received, I sent a thank you email shortly after the interviews. Never got a response from any of them, so you're probably in a great spot. Good luck!

It sounds like you're in a good spot based on your feelings from the interview. Seems like everyone has had pretty good experiences with their responses to thank you emails, but I had the total opposite in one particular instance. I interviewed with a senior manager at a public firm while going through recruiting in grad school. I felt pretty good about it, and the last thing the manager said to me as I left was “I'm very impressed. We'll be in touch.” I sent a follow up email to say thank you and got a quick, positive response back. Eventually, I heard that other people that interviewed were called back for another round of interviews and some of them received offers. I never even got an email or letter telling me that they weren't interested. Another person I knew in the interview process followed up with the recruiter for the firm, and he never even got a response from her! Needless to say, nearly everyone that I talked to that interviewed with this firm was not happy with them, and I honestly wouldn't even entertain the thought of working with them if they ever tried to recruit me to work there after they left such a sour taste in my mouth.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't read into the email responses. If you and your interviewer were laughing and having a good conversation, you probably did well enough for a second interview or offer.

Usually the public firms are very good at saying telling you either yes or no. Often offers are extended on the same day as your interview, but rejection notices could take up to 2 weeks, as they try to hold off notifying you until they get a positive response from their targeted interviewee(s). You could have done great at the interview, but there just might be someone else who had done better. Which sucks, but it happens.

Well I took some algebra, general knowledge and logic tests at the end of the interview. There were lots of questions and I was given 12minutes to do as much as I can. Totally surprising for me because I wasn't expecting to be tested..haha.

I believe that test will weed me out if they really want use that test as a basis of reaching out with an offer.

It sounds like you did well. I personally have gotten an offer every time but once I have received good feedback like that.

The other time makes for a funny story (and it's all true)- I woke out later than I wanted to for an interview. Hurried through the shower, made the decision to shave on the road (I have a decent electric shaver). Got dressed and left for the job interview. I'm shaving and driving to the job interview.

    Razor dies.

Half my face has about three days of facial hair on it. Somehow I convince myself that maybe they won't notice it and drive on.

I round a corner on the highway and hit GRIDLOCKED traffic. I calmly tell myself, “It'll be okay. Just call. They'll understand. Everybody hits traffic.” So I decide to call.

Phone dies as soon as the receptionist picks up.

“It's cool, Biil Brasskey, just charge your phone and call back.”

Wife took my charger and left in other car.

So I finally make it an hour late with a half-shaved face and no advance warning. The firm graciously allows me to interview- probably because they are afraid that I will go postal on them otherwise. I mean they do have a big, sweaty man with a half shaved face sitting in their lobby. (I'm 6'4″, 225 lbs, and very fit and it was like 100 degrees & humid that day, big guy + hot day = sweat)

Aside from the fact that I looked like a vagrant, the interviews went rather well. The potential peer even said outright he would recommend me for hire. With the benefit of hindsight, he was probably afraid I'd yell gibberish and do something crazy like bite him.

OMG, billbrasskey! I know that you probably weren't laughing at the time, but that is a hilarious story. I needed a good laugh-thanks!

I don't want to burst your bubble, but I've found responses to follow up emails are kind of random… that is, I haven't noticed any strong correlation between progressing to the next round (or getting an offer from final round) and getting a response from the follow up emails.

Having participated in recruiting for the company(ies) that I've worked for including resume screening, discussions with hiring manager, etc, the hiring decision is almost always made before the candidate makes it home. Usually within an hour of final interview, or at the end of the day, all the interviewers and the dept head/director/whoever will discuss the candidates collectively and decide on whether to proceed.

In any case, I'd definitely follow up, but wouldn't read too much into whether or not they respond and what they say… I find it's more of a personal thing on how people respond to follow ups.

Well, One of the times I got a response to thank you mail I didn't get the job.

Another time I didn't get a response and I got the job.

I guess I am an oddball!

Alright so as you recall that I interviewed with this firm about a week and half ago. As i said earlier I sent an email to the partner that I interviewed with and he expressed how nice it was to meet with me. So I've recently followed up to see where I am in the process since its been a little over a week. He then responds to my email with this “MrCPA2B, Again It was enjoyable meeting with you again. As far as the process, we currently have a few more interviews to conduct and will be in touch. Have a nice afternoon”. This has me re-thinking that I may not be the perfect candidate for them. I also just found out that one of my good friends also has an interview with them. This makes me really nervous. Does this mean i just need to give up and search elsewhere. I think his email was a hint for me to look for another job/career.
