To the community and Jeff,

I was curious what kind of study guides and resources you use for those of you that have taken or will take the IRS RTRP test (Registered Tax Return Preparer).

Jeff – perhaps if there’s enough interest you could create a Ninja study guide for the RTRP test 😉 Obviously there’s too much out there to describe every single detail and possibility, but I think a Ninjaesque study guide would be swell.

Nobody has to take this exam? my boss asked me to take, i passed regulation, should i still need to sign up for a review course for this ?

I haven't taken it and won't be taking it, but I would suspect if you passed REG, and/or you have a season or two preparing taxes, then you probably wouldn't have too much trouble passing this. If it were me and I had already passed REG, I think I would just review the more nuts & bolts aspects of tax preparation, such as reviewing the forms mentioned in the link above (6251, 5309, etc.) to get an idea of the mechanics of how the forms/calculations flow, then review the e-filing requirements and procedures. I believe the test costs $116, so for that price I would just review some things on my own and take the test to see what happens.

I do not plan on taking it, as that exam is one of the reasons I decided to take the CPA exam. If you are a CPA, attorney, or an EA, you do not need to pass the RTRP exam. You have until December 31 2013 until it needs to be passed.
