Is passing a part on the first try luck?

Everyone in my office keeps telling me that eventually a test comes along which you will pass. There are a few people here who have been attempting tests for years and have passed some, or even all parts but too much time elapsed, and their best advice is simply “your test will come along.” On the other hand, we have people who pass all parts on the first try. Did these people simply get lucky (and I think they did since one of them received 75’s on two parts and a 76 on another)?

It can be very discouraging knowing you have studied and prepared but you get “unlucky” on test day.

    AUD-Failed (Waiting for Score)
    BEC-PASSED (First try)
    REG-Failed (Retake February 2013)
    FAR-Failed (Retake January 2013)

Here is the order I passed my exams and how I did it:

FAR – Found a four-leaf clover the morning of my exam.

AUD – Wished upon a shooting star the night before my exam.

REG – Bowl of Lucky Charms after the 1st testlet. Delicious.

BEC – Found a sparklin' penny, heads up, as I was walking into the exam.

I never would have passed if not for a tremendous amount of luck.

    Mini….. Come on!!!!

Your luck will depend in the amount of quality time you put into your study!!! This is not rocket science, you study, you pass. As simple as that.

…. and by study, I mean quality time really invested in learning and understanding the concept. You see those three not pass I have… I didn't study much and I got the grade I deserved! If I keep doing what I am doing so far, which is nothing I will not pass again.

SO! My point is if you really study, you pass. That is the best of luck!

    A - 68, 81
    R - 70, 82
    F - 84

    Aud - 11/29 - 78(Yeager)

Luck has everything to do with it. When I failed my first time taking Audit, I realized half-way through the test I was wearing grey underwear! How embarassing! Everyone knows red is a more lucky color. I heard it also has to do with what your parents named you. Unfortunately for you, “Jake” is historically a very unlucky name.

I think what mini is trying to say, in his awesomely smart a$$ way, is that hard work has more to do with passing and less to do with luck. The Sims are predetermined before you take the test but the MCQs are adaptive. Luck has nothing to do with those. Don't let other people judge you or get you down. The only way to fail is to quit.

@ Mini, i guess I will buy few boxes of Lucky Charm today; you are now my inspiration LOL

@ Jake, I agree with jokami 100%. It is all about quality on your study time. Some people pass a test after 2 or 3 weeks studying, others like me need 6-8 weeks. In the end is all about your commitment and desire. Probably, those that are saying that it is all about luck have not tried to take one exam or they are just failing one exam after the other because they are waiting on their luck…..

What do you call it when your computer effs up and they have to shut down the PC…leaving you a little amount of time for SIMS with a nonresponsive keyboard? Luck plays a part, but the harder you study the luckier you'll get on exam day.

(on the bright side, I don't think I would have passed anyway….the computer problems are just my excuse đŸ™‚

    JakeO…

If you are new here… You might not understand where Mini is coming from. He is like the Simon Cowell of this forum. You don't necessarily like what he says or the way he says it. But his thought and comment are right on the money. People respect and listen to him. That's right after you understand his choice of communicating with you… Then and ONLY then, is when those comments get really funny…

Luck is a word that unwilling people use to explain willing peoples' success!

I have the same at work….people can't pass any parts but when I nutted up and studied my BUTT off while they went to lunch, took karate, worked out, etc. etc. etc. I get the lucky comments too.

    People, forget 'em! đŸ˜€

@PP – Are you a Sampras fan or is your nickname totally unrelated?

Anyway, what you described sucks and is definitely BAD luck. Luck will help you fail but its not going to get you over the hump to a pass.

    @Pistol –

I think what Jake was refering to was luck as far as what the questions in your test are, as opposed to a technical problem causing you to fail. To me, banking on luck is a preemptive excuse for not preparing as well as you should have. Like Marivy said, everyone is different and needs a different approach to studying. He needs to find what works for him and get after it.

That is terrible about your computer, though. What a horrible feeling that would have been… I don't know what I would have done!

@Mini – Unrelated. It's a combination of Pistol Pete Maravich and a Smashing Pumpkins song.

Yeah, I was mad about the computer thing for a long time…but I've accepted it now, and like I said, is probably not the only reason I failed.

Banking on luck is one thing, and is a poor excuse for studying. But getting a 75 or 76 may have something to do with luck. I know on my BEC exam if I would have had one more Variance or ECON problem, I probably would have failed. So I got lucky there, in some respects.

    Lol @ mini…

Yes luck is a huge part of it. FAR for example has so many topics to be tested on and getting 90 MCQs and 6 sims and a research on topics you are familiar with would help. However if you are thoroughly prepared on all topics, no need for luck.

I felt I lucked out on my sims, I didn't understand everything 100%
