[Last Chance CPA]

Has anyone found it helpful to call CPA firms directly? I am way out of school and experienced in non-accounting, consulting work. But as I finish up the CPA exams, I wanted to know if anyone has had luck calling firms directly to try to reach a recruiter? Is it appropriate?

I had good luck visiting firms directly. A phone call is easier to dismiss IMHO.

In what area are you looking for work? I know around here (rural area) people may appreciate you dropping in personally to hand over a resume, but that isn't that case everywhere. You may also want to check out the company's website and see if they have directions for how they want to receive resumes or how they want to be contacted.

I am looking at big companies only because my wife is in law school and we want to remain mobile. Also, I am in a big market in San Diego. I dont think they will appreciate walk-ins here…

For big companies, I would think you could call and ask who the recruiter(s) are so that you can have a name to send info to, primarily because they'll have so many applicants and inquiries that even if it was terribly protocol, no one would ever know it was you…whereas a smaller company might only have 2 applicants all week or all month and know it was you.
