First, Ethics and business law…WHAT ethics and business law. I took a tax exam.

1st section of mcqs: Medium easy

2nd section of mcqs: Seemed to definitely be more calculations.

3rd section of mcqs: Same, more calcs. Possibly hard, I’ve never noticed a strong increase for sure.

Nailed the research question, no doubt.

One SIM: Wasn’t terrible but my mind was fried.

One SIM: Was horrendous, just extremetly long across two tabs of information and lots of extra info.

One SIM: The research SIM I nailed, very easy.

One SIM: On a topic I knew but I know I missed some.

One SIM: I was able to use the research tab to do SOME limited research and while the specific SIM wasn’t brutal,trying to find the exact scenario presented was difficult.

One SIM: WHO KNOWS, I cannot for the life of me remember what it was. I sure as shoot hope that I answered it! 😀

That’s all I know. Like Audit, I think I did really well on MCQ’s and poorly overall on SIMS. Did I pass, who knows?

@Maverick….I love the verses in your signature. Galatians 2:20 is a good one too. I know that if God doesn't help me with these exams, I would be unable to pass them. I think you and I are on a similar schedule. I'm taking REG in August as well. What are you using to study with? How's your studying going? So far, I'm pretty comfortable with the material. I've finished Individual, Transactions in Property, Partnership, and Corporate Tax.

Just got out REG a few hours ago, here is how it went :

Testlet 1: Medium- Easy (Felt very confident)

Testlet 2: Hard (This was by far one of the toughest testlets I have seen on any exam thus far. I nearly flagged every question. The questions also seemed to be asked in an opposite way than in my softwar, or any of the other testlets I have seen. Needless to say this confused the ish outta me.)

Testlet 3: Easy-Medium ( Guess I bombed that second testlet. Diffuclty was similar to the first testlet, maybe a bit easier.

Sim 1: Not bad, actually something I had seen before. Pleasantly surprised.

Sim 2: Also not bad, a bit tougher than the first, still managable to an extent.

Sim 3: WTF? I have gotten a SIM on this topic on 3 of the 4 exams. Each screwed me in a different way. Awesome. Not sure why they are focusing on this one topic, not sure at all.

Sim 4 Probably the hardest SIM I have encountered to date. No literature at all on where to even begin with on this one. Guessfest 2012

Sim 5: Research, actually feel confident with this one.

Sim 6: Pretty sure this wasnt even a REG topic. Not really sure where they pulled this from.

Overall, a devestating experience. Really hoping I pass but as always expecting the worst. I would hate to have to restudy for 3 exams in the next window.

I know what you mean on the sims. I took REG today also. Just brutal. It was hard to keep myself from resuming studying when I got back from the test center, because I'm that convinced I bombed.

A word of .. . caution? I guess.

Each exam is very different.

What CPApending described was very different than what I experienced today. Its a crapshoot for sure. There were whole “major” modules of study that I feel were not tested much at all, while the tiniest details of “minor” modules were tested.

Lesson to those studying – Give every module equal attention. Do not skip any modules. Do not assume the % split between tax and law will be what you expect. Prepare to sit for a law exam. Prepare to sit for a tax exam.

I took REG last Thursday and walked out of there completely sure I failed. I didn't see much business law either! I thought I could depend on that to boost my score. Oh, well.

I had some questions about the MC but overall felt pretty confident about them but the SIMs killed me. Even if I had an idea on some of the questions, I feel like there were too many variables to be truly confident about any of my answers. Too many opportunities for a wrong answer.

I think I got somewhere in the 60s or 70s. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's a passing score.

On the brightside, I'm going to take a week off of studying to recharge my batteries for the next testing windows! That little time off is all I have to look forward to these days.

yes. sims killed me today..wtf? even the concepts i was comfortable with were made into nasty, difficult simulations. i was so prepared going into this one, didnt think id come out so devastated over the sims. praying for a pass.

@bluegirl – you hit the nail on the head. I KNEW, KNEW KNEW KNEW that I was going to get a “heavier” law exam b/c I've been doing taxes for 8 years. I swear I had a freaking law exam. When I left the test I was so pissed because I felt like the AICPA did it to me on purpose b/c they somehow knew I was a tax person. Obviously, that was ridiculous of me to think that, but I was feeling a lot of emotion after thinking the test was going to be easy for me.

So be careful when people say that it's all tax b/c I'm pretty sure I got killed on Law!

@futurecpa712: Good Luck tomorrow! SIMs are usually tax related. I used Becker & Wiley SIMs to prepare for it! Be familiar with each topic, and be prepared to dig through it. Use authority literature for topics that you aren't sure of.

I would say, if you want to get at least a few MCQ's right for sure and potentially an easy sim, make sure to know how many months after year end you have to file a tax return for individuals, corps, trusts, estates, etc.

Also, know the various statutes of limitations. That should get you a question or two too.

@futurecpa712 try to give yourself as much time as possible for the sims. I was probably able to eek a few more points out because I used the research tab. The research tab can be a time suck though so be careful.

MRS300 I HOPE that if I have to take this again, I get all legal questions. I think maybe I had 5-8 mcq's.

It was all tax all the time, but as you said that's not probably what would happen if I did it again.
