    Cliff notes:

    – KPMG Advisory has a Senior Analyst position in my area (see excerpt of job description below)

    – I work in governmental accounting making mid $50k with GREAT benefits (e.g. 280 vacation/sick hours per year, 9 paid holidays, top 3 HMO plan for my family costs $360 in employee premium per year)

    – Being able to add Big 4 to my resume interests me (especially since they are virtually non-existent in my city)

Any insight is appreciated… What do they look for? Any good/bad experiences? Work life compared to audit?

    Responsibilities:

Provide clients with a variety of business process analysis, cost analysis, and operational reviews

Perform project-oriented work on key client engagements

Assist with the creation of proposals and other business development activities

Help state, local, and other public sector organizations identify and manage risks inherent in business processes and technology systems that support business objectives

    Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university; degree in accounting, finance, business administration, public administration, political science, or economics preferred

Internship or work experience, specifically focused on state and local government, preferred

Proficiency with MS Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio

Strong analytical and critical thinking skills

Exceptional interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to gain the confidence and respect of team members and clients

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

I am standing in employee orientation right now starting my first day in kmpg advisory. I think you should try to get the job and then make the decision after you have more info to make an informed decision. Advisory is a very broad term but from what I understand, its much easier to get a job wherever you want after puttin in some years at a big 4 firm. It opens doors that would otherwise not be an option. Hope this helps good luck

    AUD 73 (Aug 12) 77
    BEC 66 71 (Nov 12) 80
    REG 54 81 (May 13) 81
    FAR 63 (Dec 13) 75 TEXAS

Thank you for the response TripleNetAcct. That is exactly the reason why I'm intrigued by the opportunity. While I've had excellent career progression since starting governmental accounting three years ago (first “grown up” job), I feel that adding the Big 4 experience would make me more marketable to public accounting and the private sector later on.

Big 4 experience will lead you to any other job you may want.

From what I have seen, kids who go into Big 4 vs ones that go private… the Big 4 will pay off down the road in terms of job availability and PAY.

    FAR - 84
    AUD - 94
    REG - 86
    BEC - 86

    TripleNetAcct and UCMCPA,

Thank you for your feedback a few weeks back. I'm going to post an update under another thread (titled “KPMG office interview – insight would be appreciated”) to solicit some tips prior to the final interview.

Just thought I'd let you know in case you would like an update of where I stand today. I'll post a summary in this thread after I'm through with the process in the hopes of being a resource for anyone who may find themselves in my shoes in the future.
