How bad does it look if you resign from your job in less than a year? I feel miserable in my current position.

All depends what your position is, reasons you are leaving and your qualifications. My last company had 4 people leave after only 5-8 months each(all within one year too!). But they all had their CPA licenses. I had to stick around for 1 year and a half becuase it was my first job and I had no license. Best of luck to you. I can relate being miserable at a job. I hated mine with that company.

I don't have my CPA yet, but am in the process. Basically the pay and benefits here are low, it's a 4 person shop, one of whom is mentally unstable. Everyone knows this about her but just puts up with it.

This place is not good for training or growth and my employer acts as though he is highly irritated to have to deal with me, yet the position was advertised as entry level/training provided. Since it's such a small shop, I have to ask him for help/questions since there isn't really anyone else. I just sit at my computer all day and my employer will summon me to criticize my work. I eat lunch by myself everyday. I have been here for 6 months. This is tax/accounting/bookkeeping.

@JQA02169 and CPATerminator hang in there! In this economy it can be hard to decide to change jobs for happiness, but when I am thinking I would rather drive into a tree on my way home from work at 2AM just so I dont have to go in 8 somewhat hours later….. it was time to change!

I would say it's only a problem if it becomes habitual. A lot of us at one time or another will have a job we hate and have to get out of there, and most employers understand that. As I'm sure you know, don't talk negatively about the company in interviews and just say that it wasn't a good fit for you, you should have done more research before accepting the job, etc. Good luck!

apbandj hit the nail on the head. You just need to be cautious that it doesn't turn into a trend on your resume. I personally left my first job out of college after 8 months. I was able to spin it that it was a great opportunity for me to learn blah blah blah but it wasn't a good fit for me and what I wanted to do.

If you leave two or three companies after a short timeframe then all of a sudden it becomes a red flag.

As apbandj said, make sure not to speak negatively about any past experiences. There is always a way to spin it into something positive even though it's a load of BS.

    REG - 2013 - PASSED (YAEGER + NINJA NOTES + NINJA AUDIO)

    ETHICS - 2013 - PASSED

DONE!!! Thank you A71 for all the support! Hiya!!!

I want to add one more thing to what apbandj and mdrobbin said about not saying anything negative…. also be sure when you get the new job not to say anything bad about prior job.

Next week I'm interviewing with a midsize firm. I'll try my hardest not to say anything negative. I'll just say that I'm interested in obtaining a position where I can also do audit in order to fulfill the requirements for the CPA license.

This is something I can't do in my current position.

I wanted to add what others had said about everyone has a job they hate at some point or another. So you are not alone there. 🙂 I would make the best of it. Eat lunch alone? No problem, gives you time to study. FYI…I eat lunch alone most days too and I am totally ok with it! Study time! And just try your best to learn as much as possible. You may not realize it now but it is your skill set you are building so learn as much as you can, you can take that with you as you continue your career path. Don't let a miserable boss get you down, he/she is a sucky person but that is their problem, not yours. Don't let it affect your life. I would not let anyone stand in my way with their bad attitude. Bad attitude, oh wells, I am here to learn to make myself better. Good luck with the interview. Don't talk negatively about the company; just state the obvious, limited career opportunities. Learn from that place the things that you hate and vow to never treat people that way when you are in charge. It will only help you grow as a person.

I know it sounds like such a small thing to eat lunch alone. But sitting here for 8 to 10, 11 hours a day everyday with no one to talk to except to get scolded and belittled by my boss can get to you after awhile. I imagine this is what solitary confinement feels like.

    #353851

Can you get out and meet up friends for lunch? Or just get out of there for a little bit by yourself to get refreshed? Anything you can change to help the time you have left there better might help. For me personally I ate way too much to make my life happier while working at my miserable position. Going out to lunch was my favorite part of the day.

I am eating way too much now too. I wake up thinking about what I'll eat that day, so I have

    something to feel cheerful about.

I should be studying and try to do so secretly. My employer has never

said if it's okay or not for me to study at work and I prefer not to ask, bc what if he says no?
