Missed the mark on REG, again

My first re-take with REG and I fell just short with a 73. My first attempt was a morbid 57. It’s encouraging to see a 16 point increase, but I work with tax regularly at the firm that I’m at so I feel I should have passed this thing already. I’m going for my third try in July sometime (undecided on what day).

My first attempt I just used Becker. My second try and I used Becker and supplemented Ninja MCQ. I think the Ninja test bank is actually better at explaining the material so I will be sticking with that especially since I didn’t even hit the review phase.

My plan is to redo all Becker MCQ once, then hit Ninja MCQ and SIMs and the review phase. Is there something else that I should do? I don’t do well with Ninja audio (my mind tends to wander) and I’m not completely sold on the Ninja notes. Also, I really don’t feel like re-reading the Becker book, but if that is what is recommended, I’ll do it. I want to slay this beast more than anyone.

Any advice would be awesome…thanks everyone. Congrats to those who’ve passed!

Since you have a background in tax, I would really focus in on Business Law. There are a tons of different MCQs that can be twisted and manipulated for Business Law questions that trip people up. Good luck!

Gabe's right – hit business law hard. It can be a little tricky. Be careful not to get too complacent on the tax end though – I almost made the same mistake when I took REG. 7ish years working in tax and thought it would be a piece of cake. Instead, I found myself getting tripped up on a lot of little details just because I wasn't paying attention.

You'll get it next time! 🙂

I just failed my first REG attempt with a 71 and I feel like I struggled with some tax topics. And I work in tax. I would hit everything again.

Cool. Yeah, I felt great after this tax season (only my third). Learned a ton and was exposed to even more. Any more advice? Ideas? I was kinda hoping I passed so I could move back to FAR. Oh well, it will make me a better CPA I hope!

Could I get away with doing Becker and Ninja MCQ & Sims supplemented with Ninja notes?

I agree with taxgeek83 – working in tax can sometimes be a disadvantage because you don't always read the question fully through. I cannot even count how many times I got a question wrong because I didn't read words like ‘not' or ‘except'. Slow down, read the question and you will be fine.
