    Hi all,

    Yesterday my boss called me to go to his office and asked me to take RTRP (Registered tax return preparer) test. He said everyone in the office has to take that unless you are an CPA or Attorney or passed EA exam in the last 6 month. Recently i just passed my cpa exam. Do you guys have to take that test and how to prepare for the exam.

    ps. My boss is only EA, his main business is only individual clients.

    Why is he making you take it if have already passed the CPA exam? I thought CPAs didn't have to take it.

    Licensed CPAs do not have to take it. Considering his boss is only an EA, he may not have the experience yet to be licensed.

    Ahh good point. That stinks.

    thank you all for posing, yes, i just passed all my cpa exams and my boss cant sign me for the experience requirement, that means i have to find a cpa firm to work in order to be licensed. The reasons i am still staying is the flexible hours and i will be going back to school maybe in fall 2012 for my masters.

    I've always heard that a CPA > Masters when it comes to pay, and that once you get your CPA license, a Masters will not make much – if any – difference when it comes to your career. Is there any specific reason that you want to get your Masters? Don't get me wrong… I love school, and I've thought about going back to school. But the idea of getting into even more student loan debt for possibly no tangible benefit scares me! Just curious what your reasoning is. 🙂

    It's a win for the cpas out there. All those non cpas have to study and actually understand the material/ subjects rather than entering stuff into turbo tax… and pass. I got my ptin for 2011 last month. No need to take competancy exam as the next step. This will weed out a bunch of people and open up opportunities for cpas

    Joke, if you are taking the exam anyway, you might as well register for your own PTIN?

    kand,

    i have to go back to school in order to fulfill 150 cr requirement and MS in taxation in Baruch (it's a CUNY school) is pretty good, plus i heard they have a good career center, i am thinking if i am luck i could get a job during my master. My current job doesn't pay well, don't laugh at me if i tell you i only make $13/hr and no other benefit. .

    herbie,

    yes, i just renewed my ptin this year, my boss told me he will reimburse me, but he never did last yr. so i dont expect him to reimburse me this time 🙁

    Ohh ok, I totally understand that. Sorry, sometimes I forget about the unit requirements of other states (I'm in CA and went with a lesser unit requirement with more experience). Sounds like a good plan.

    You should definitely be able to find better than your current job. I worked somewhere making about $13 an hour after I was laid off from public accounting… I actually made more on unemployment but I couldn't handle NOT furthering my accounting knowledge, so I took a job doing the accounting for retirement accounts. There's no shame in working for $13 an hour. At least you're working and gaining accounting experience. It'll help you find a job – I know that my current employer was very impressed that I had taken that job when I would have gotten paid more for sitting on my butt. Plus, I was like an all-star at that company. I helped them streamline their processes and got a couple really excellent recommendations on my LinkedIn profile. 🙂 I am a firm believer in that something good can come out of anything, with the right attitude and work ethic.

    Good luck to you – I hope that you find what you are looking for.

    @kandis,

    I think that if you are in industry it helps a lot having a CPA and a MBA. I work in a large publically traded company and they are all about getting the CPA and MBA. I think it depends on what you want to do but if you want to be a controller or CFO I think a Masters of some sort is really helpful.

    Yeah I guess it must really depend on where you are. I work in private accounting and I'm pretty sure getting a Master's degree wouldn't increase my pay at all. The controller and CFO both are CPAs but do not have their Master's.

    The RTRP test does not need to be passed until December 31, 2013. So there is still 2 years before it needs to be passed. I would not rush to take it, as I would prob just take the EA if I still was not licensed at that point.

    I think a masters is only good if you don't have a job or cpa or any experience or u need it for ur cpa/credits. Going to a top tier school helps also to use their recruitment. Cpa and MBA is supposed to be the best

    @porschify,

    originally i was thinking about getting my EA, but i am so tired of studying from the cpa exams. so i might just go for RTRP right now

    @Herbieherb…why do you say a Master's is not good if you are a CPA and have experience? What's so good about an MBA as opposed to a Macc? I plan to resume my Macc after passing the exam. I know in some schools getting a Macc is very expensive but at the university I went to it costs about $10k as opposed to $30k which is what some of my friends have paid at other universities..
