NC Ethics Course

Just found out I passed my last test – woohoo! I printed out my application today and had completely forgotten about the stupid ethics thing. Not like it wasn’t tested on the exams!

Anyway, it looks like NC has us take a 8-hr CPE course through the state CPA Association. Only offered online as self-study. Does anyone know anything about it? I assume it’s timed, but is it a video lecture? Articles?

It looks like a lot of states have an exam – is there a test at the end of this course?

Not anxious, just curious. Gonna have to wait until the next pay day to figure out how to afford it, but that’s all fine too. I’ve pretty much accepted I’ll be throwing money at state CPA boards and societies for the rest of my life 🙂

@JS867 I am also in NC… It's not easy being a CPA apparently. I looked at the application and it looks real tedious, but I'll be okay with doing that if I have passed my tests!!! I will do anything if I passed. I will find out tonight when I get home if I passed my last section also…Congrats on the pass!!! I hope I will be saying I'm done also.

I don't think there is a test at the end of the ethics course. I would like to take the 8 hour face to face lecture that the NCACPA offers, but i don't see where they have it scheduled yet. I think the self-studies have quizes throughout the whole thing just to make sure you were paying attention.

Just curious…who are your 3 moral character references going to be…Do they have to be CPA's?

Let me know what happens…good luck

Hello! I am in NC, too. Not ready for ethics yet but wanted to say hi! I still have REG and experience to complete before ethics is a concern. It is expensive!!
Do you participate in any state association activities? I am still hoping for a job in public and think networking might help. If you do go, do you do it to network? Do you enjoy it?

    Hi to both of you!

@JMCAP – Based on your signature, it looks like you passed also! Congrats! I was looking for the seminar myself, but either they've stopped offering it or they're not offering it anytime soon. I think I'm going to have a short break in my Master's program where I'll just try to knock it out. As for my references, I do believe they have to be CPAs this time around. I am going to ask the CPA volunteer I supervise, our company's external auditor who I work pretty closely with, and then a member of our board. The board member is the only one I'm unsure about. I wonder if the CPAs have to be in NC? I know a couple of others but they are in different states. Any ideas?

@moniker – Good luck with REG! It was definitely my hardest. I am NOT good at taxes. I don't do any networking, mostly because I've never had a lot of time. I live in Burlington, but work in W-S so a lot of my time gets eaten in commute. I did do a few in college and had a tough time because I can be a little socially awkward in that setting.

I'm really glad to have “met” you both! You're the first two from NC I've ever seen on this site LOL!

one other question for you two. i provided 3 character references when i applied to take the exams. are there additional references required for the license? mine were not cpa's. two attorneys and a phd i had worked with provided mine. did you provide those in order to take exams?

Yes. The references for the exam are different from the references for the application. For the exam they can be almost anyone. For the application they have to be CPAs.

They really make you jump through hoops in this state LOL! I've heard NC is one of the toughest out there still.

Thank you for helping me realize that. As for toughest, not sure I agree. My kids are in Colorado and from what I have read I would not yet meet the ed requirements. Need to look into it further but they require some specific courses I have not taken. Ethics is one. I live close to the board in raleigh and always drop off my nts applications in person. They are always so nice. I am going today with REG request.
    Thank you, again.

Hey Guys, I'm also really glad to meet you both as well.

@JS, my question is how come I had to provide transcripts and courses taken when I applied for the exam in the first place? Now I have to provide all that over again because I don't have my masters….ugh! I plan having a couple of CPA's from my old firm as references and the CPA I work under now. What do you mean board member? I don't know any. I may just have to bite the bullet and get the self-study. I have emailed the NCACPA to see when the live next class will be.

@monikernc I also think the references have to be in NC. I also live in Raleigh and I think I will drop off my final application for my license in person, that's a great idea. Good luck on REG! You got this! Just a thought, what is the experience requirement? I have worked in accounting for 6 years so I'm pretty confident whatever it is i have it covered.

    Talk to you guys later!

Hey there – I live in the Raleigh area, too. I'm planning to take the ethics course towards the end of April while I'm waiting for my FAR Score (seems like a good way to pass the time and forget about score release!).

The reason you have to provide transcripts with the exam application is because the state won't release your scores until you have met the 150 hour education requirement. I knew someone from the Becker live study who didn't meet the education requirements yet and still didn't know his score from an exam he took 4 months prior. I don't know why anyone would want to do that!

Best of luck to all of you – hopefully we will all be done soon! 🙂

    Rebecca

PS: Let me know if any of you have any good FAR tips. I'm taking the exam for the 3rd time in the month.

There are a few ways to meet experience. 1 year under active CPA, 4 years in accounting, 4 years teaching. I have about 6 months but my current job is not under a CPA so after exams I want to get a different job, hopefully public. I am way older than typical candidate and in spite of other good credentials have not been able to get in the door.

I just dropped my REG app off at board. They really are nice folks. I love taking mine in person. On Oberlin Rd by Wade Ave.

Hi, I'm also in Raleigh and dropped off my initial application in person. Did you notice all the boxes of kleenex? You know people must be in there crying. I am grateful that the people who work there are so nice. There's a cupcake bakery across the street. I haven't been in there, but it may be necessary at some point.

Thanks for all the helpful posts!

I just got a call from NCACPA. They said the live course will be available after April 1st when the website and calendar are updated. I don't know if I can wait that long. May just have to do the self study.

So many raleigh people. Where did you folks go to school? I went to Appalachian. Got my undergrad in finance and MBA years ago then went back for 3 semesters from fall 2013 through fall 2014. I love ASU and Boone!!!

Let us know how the ethics goes. I want to do live course when the time comes but will do whatever it takes once I have exams done and experience.

Kool…i did see the kleenex today. Was tempted to get a smoothie after but just kept going.

I want to go to board meeting one month.

So NCACPA called me yesterday. The first live course is May 23rd. The only difference between live course and self-study is that with self-study you have to take an open book test during and at the end. I can't wait until May though. I'm going to buy the self-study and try to knock it out in the next few weeks.

@moniker I went to undergrad at Wingate Universityclose to Charlotte. I played soccer there. Then took non-degree classes at NC State for my hours requirement.

    Hi Guys!

I just had a question about CPAs signing off on your license. I work for a very small firm with only one licensed CPA so how can I get another two to sign off once I get the exam passed? I do have an old professor who still has an active CPA license so there's two but how could I get a third one? Do you have to work with all three or can it just be somebody who knows you?

@monikernc – I did my undergrad in Business Leadership at Peace College, then an MBA from Campbell (at the RTP campus), then took accounting classes at Wake Tech to meet the education requirement. I'm thinking about attending the board meeting after I submit my application… I'm not sure if they list all the names they approve for licensure during the meeting but that would be pretty cool!

@AScott89 – You do not need to work with the CPAs who sign off as your references. I plan to use a coworker, a professor, and a neighbor who all have their licenses. You may want to think about some networking events to make contact with other CPAs (the NCACPA website usually lists some) or ask your coworker or professor if they have anyone you could meet.
