I need three more credits (one class) in Accounting and was just wondering what programs people have used for any additional credits/courses needed? I am in NY and want to be able to complete them online, the NYS coordinator recommended the University of Phoenix, has anyone used this or used another program to gain additional credits?

    FAR 5/31/14 - 86
    AUD 7/28/14 - 94
    REG 10/1/14 - 89
    BEC 11/10/14 - 88

I took Intermediate Accounting II through UC Berkeley. Cost was $900. It was a nice prelude to the material you need to know for FAR.

I also took an Income Tax class through a community college. Cost was <$100. That was also a nice prelude to REG.

A lot of people from my school used LSU's online classes. It's worth looking into. I used community colleges near me, but I'm not sure if NY accepts community college credit. You should check with the state board about that or do some research to find out because I would recommend doing the community college route if they accept it. It was cheap and the classes I took were really easy. I took “fun” classes (personal health and library research) that don't relate to accounting at all because I wanted a break from my regular studies.

Thanks for the responses! I don't believe NYS accepts to community college credit, which would have been nice!

I was actually looking into doing a Corporate Tax class to lead into REG which i'm taking in October (kill two birds with one stone) – which would work nicely because for my degree I had only taken individual tax.

I realize anywhere is going to be somewhat expensive I looked into University of Phoenix and it would be $1,850 for the class, so I was trying to see if there are any alternatives, or see if anyone has used Phoenix and thinks its worth it. I'll definitely look into LSU online and UC Berkeley.

Isn't University of Phoenix on the line for losing accreditation? I wouldn't do them. I used LSU. Fairly priced and convenient.

Studying with Wiley Review, Wiley Test Bank, Ninja Audio.
    Retakes with Ninja MCQ only...awesome!
    Far - 1/28 72, 7/22 79
    Aud - 2/28 70, 8/14 83
    Bec - 4/10 80

Check out the UNA/CPA Excel classes. They are $495 for the 3 units and are CPA review material. I did a bunch of them even though I didn't need accounting units, I just wanted to quickly earn 15 units while studying for the exam.

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.

Thanks StephAV, this is exactly what I was looking for, how are the classes difficulty wise? How long does it take to complete the course / how many hours a week?

The downside is that you can only get your grade/transcript after the semester is over. I found out about these just a few months ago and decided to knock out 15 units before the summer term ended July 22nd. Each class has 4 exams, they are timed, but open book/notes and just online and depending on the class they are 1.5 to 2 hours, then ~8 quizzes, which are 20 minutes to 45 minutes… Then there is graded homework that is worth a very small % of your grade and can take a lot more time just because of the sheer volume. I started going through and just taking the quizzes and tests to get through more quickly and I didn't care so much about my grade, just a passing score. The tests can be hard without doing any of the homework though… I'd say if you do just the quizzes and tests and you are already familiar with the topic (like you've gone through your review material for that exam) you could finish a class in 15 hours… You wouldn't get the grade until January though.

I'd say this is an easy option because there is no required communication/class participation and it is going towards what you are working on anyway. You might consider the Audit course… Looks like you just took that exam. Or REG, they have 2 tax classes and a business law. I preferred using my review course to learn the material then do the course. Check out the syallabi.

Thanks so much for the detailed response! It definitely sounds like the way to go. I am planning on taking REG in October so I think I'll most likely take the second tax class they offer. I emailed the NYS coordinator to confirm these would work/not overlap old material, so once I hear back I will be signing up! Definitely a much more affordable option, thanks again!! Also I see you're taking Audit in a few days, good luck!!

I was also able to take a Becker review course for accounting credit. Two birds with one stone. It's quite expensive though – through DeVry/Keller. I ended taking all Becker for 9 credits. FAR is worth 3. The others are 2.

Thanks Danime! I'm contemplating pushing REG back to early October… 2 weeks to review after all this Audit studying. Ugh! I hope this works out for you and good luck on REG!

@StephAV – this is probably a silly question, but I signed up for the CPAexcel course, when taking the quizzes/exams/homework do you only have one chance to do them or can you go back and redo them? – Thanks!!

Yeah so the homework you can do until you get until right but the real tests and quizzes you get one shot. I was kind of confused when I started. I took a quiz after doing the homework for one section… There were like 3 or 4 sections. Oops! Good thing they are t/f!
