My state requires one year of experience verified by your superior to get your license.

Anyone know if your superior must be a CPA?

Anyone know if doing the accounting for your own business will meet the requirement?

    Thanks

I'm pretty sure each states varies. In WI you need your supervisor to sign off AND he/she must be a CPA.

Studying with Wiley Review, Wiley Test Bank, Ninja Audio.
    Retakes with Ninja MCQ only...awesome!
    Far - 1/28 72, 7/22 79
    Aud - 2/28 70, 8/14 83
    Bec - 4/10 80
    Reg - 5/30 64, 7/2 82

You'll have to say which state you're in, the rules are remarkably different from state to state.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

I would also like to know this. In addition do you have to pass the ethics portion with the 18 month deadline?

The CPA who signs of on your work experience should be also licensed in the illinois if he is worknig in illinois. If he is licensed in Flordia and works in illinois and signs off on your work experience, then the state can object and not recognize the work experience.

Be careful, some states do that.

The idea is that the CPA should be licensed and working in the same state. He should be licensed in the state where he is working.

    FAR - 81 29th Aug 2013
    AUD - 84
    REG - 82
    BEC - 89 29th Aug 2014

Leglock, I am also in Illinois. Your superior does NOT need to be a CPA. There are a whole host of things that “count” as experience, take a look at the application. Based on a general reading it seems that working for yourself *should* count as far as the type of work, but then there's no way for a superior to sign off, so I'm thinking no unfortunately. That being said, give IDFPR a call. As much as a PITA as they can be at least you will get to talk to someone who should be able to answer the question with (some) certainty.

Yes. They have to be an active CPA in good standing.

    @taxwave8:

Are you referring to the state of Illinois?

I called before submitting my app and spoke with a gentleman from the IDFPR who stated you absolutely do not have to be signed off by a CPA. He even stated your one year of experience does not need to be specifically be in accounting, could just be consulting related. Please advise if you were told something different.

taxwave — I thought you were in San Francisco. The requirements may be totally different in CA.
