Hey guys!! I’m Indian working in a CPA firm…I love my job and pretty much do what I thought I would be doing while taking the CPA exams. Recently, part of me really wants to work with other Indians (I’m not saying just Indians, but at least couple other Indians as co-workers) to feel like I belong. Everyone at my work is great, but somehow, I feel like I don’t totally connect with them and it’s making me question my future at this firm in a long term.

However, some firms that I’ve looked at it…I see very little Indians in a staff accountant roles. Is this true? Are there not too many Indians in this field? If you are Indian working in a CPA firm…please post:)

    Thank you!!

Which Indians? Casino or India-India? Just kidding…

To be honest, most Indians do not like accounting. They like challenging stuff like IT, Engineering and the higher sciences.

Maybe you should gear toward those disciplines and you'll be surprised to see how many Indians you'll come across.

I've seen lots of Chinese in accounting, much more than Indians.

Stoleway – how dare you! You only ask if they are Red Dot or Feather. LOL! On a serious note, I would probably feel a little out of place if my job environment was a different culture, even though I get along with everyone. In Texas, I have not seen any Indian accountants, but plenty of Oriental accountants. Maybe this is more of an area specific in certain cities or states?

Try living in Northern VA, i.e. Loudoun County. It has to have one of the highest concentration of Indians in the US. I used to jog through my neighborhood before I moved and if a row of townhouses had 5 houses, three were Indian households. Not sure how many were accountants though…

It's official, the Bay Area is a bubble compared to the rest of the US. My old firm in SJ was so diverse, I remember being on an engagement team where we had an Indian exp. associate, ABC (myself, new associate), woman from China as Senior, Vietnamese American as the other Senior, British manager, German manager and a New Yorker Partner, who was eventually swapped out by an Irish partner haha.

Even my company today has tons of Asians from all different countries.. India, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, China. My new manager is from Spain, the director is from South Africa and the VP is from Scotland. I worked in Alaska for some time and I'm never doing that again. I feel the rest of America is too homogenized.

I really feel lucky growing up in the bay and learning about difference cultures aside from my own.. and of course the amazing food. 🙂

    @ law0915

It was an honest topic by the OP, relax. I can see if he was complaining that he was being mistreated and how he can't stand being in this country. I'm not sure why you are offended by this thread.

    @ Lion of the Rock

I have a client in northern VA that is Indian. He started out as an ER doctor but somehow ended up being a real estate developer. He makes ALOT more money as a real estate developer. Plus, he was one of those friggin people that went to college at 15 and finished med school at 22…lol.

    @cpa628

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Dearborn and Southfield Michigan have a high Indian population?

@fsugirl2005 thanks buddy, I'll relax because you told me to. He wasn't explicitly stating demographics for demographics sake. The OP is stating that he prefers to work with his own race and is blaming race and his face skin color for him feeling segregated from and not connecting with the rest of the team. This is a RACE preference thread. He's a minority and he can learn how to play nicely with others and get over it. If he wants to be with Indians, he can go to Indian conventions and gatherings or go to India and work if he needs to be around more Indians. Reminds me of a time in retail when a black gentlemen came in and asked why there weren't any black customers…does it really matter? No.

    What race is that btw?

OP mentioned she/he wanted to talk about Indian cooking and movies, it's a cultural thing.

Law0915 why would you fault someone that doesn't feel like that he is being completely accepted for wanting to work with others where he is accepted. He never said he doesn't play nice with others. Playing nice and being accepted are two completely different things.

You have a massive chip on your shoulder which kind of upsets the dynamic of the Another71 forum. Be careful how you treat people here. I had to check myself a few times in the past. People here are vulnerable, nervous, and anxious yet very friendly. Let's be nice and bring the aggressiveness down a notch. That would be great.

The head honcho Jeff watches these forums closely so try not to rub him the wrong way.

I feel like that behavior is perfect example of why minorities don't feel accepted when playing nice. We have individuals make statements like that:

Behave, play nice, don't like how you are being treated? Go back to your country!

Really? and you wonder why he doesn't feel like he belongs completely?

@fsugirl2005 says the moderator and spokesperson of A71? Oh wait… I've been lurking the forms since 2011 so I know how the people on here are, your a71 majesty 🙂 Brb going to create a thread saying I wished I worked with more white people so I can better connect. Where can I find more white CPA professionals if you please? The minorities just don't click with me. There's too many blacks and asians at my work. Brb searching firm and industry demographics to be able to go with a higher population of whites. /end sarcasm but essentially what the original post was stating.

    EDIT:

@scarlet Give me a break, we have several ethnicities and races within our 15 person finance department. We all get along and connect just fine. He's implying feeling racially segregated. Then he can find a new firm where he feels more welcomed and connected, it doesn't necessarily need to have more Indians..but the OP specifically stated that is the race he wanted to work with.

Completely different. White people dominate the accounting profession.

Accounting is not so hard a major that it selects for only the best and brightest like in other majors (engineering, medicine, etc) so other factors act as barriers to entry including referrals from family and friends.

Different firms will have different cultures and it will absolutely vary from firm to firm.

I don't want to speak for the OP but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he actually had a desire to feel like he can connect with white folks. With comments like telling him to go back to India I can easily see why he doesn't. No matter what he does he will never really belong in the eyes of certain individuals who when they don't like what they hear he is saying, turn around and tell him to leave their country and go home.

    law0915,

Indian is not a race, and so isn't Babylonian as far as I am concerned.

This thread should probably be closed at this point?
