Public Accounting and Pregnancy

I am currently in state government as an internal auditor, which provides for incredible benefits and six months of parental leave. The problem is that the pay is not good and I am not able to gain any financial statement experience. I am looking to transition to public accounting and have my sights on a mid-sized regional firm.

My dilemma is this: I am looking at starting a family in the next year or so. How is pregnancy viewed in public accounting? I don’t want to be skipped over for promotions or good projects because of it, or have it viewed as me not caring about my work with the firm. I have heard it can be a bit of a boy’s club and this worries me. Should I wait to make this transition just because of having a baby, or am I over-thinking this?

Any and all personal experience welcome!

Because of various EEOE and labor regulations, they would be unable to deny you a job or “pass” on you because of your personal desire to expand your family. If you haven't already started down the path of another child, don't mention it in the interview process – this should have no relation to your ability to perform the duties of the role.

I really think the bigger question is once you are a mom, are you really going to want to do that as a career? Some moms thrive in a career with lots of demands but some moms don't. I don't think people in public work more hours than I do over the course of a year, but they compact those hours into a small window busy season. So from Jsn-April I'm home by 7p while they have several more hours to go and then from may-dec when most of them leave by 5, I'm still working, but it's better for my family.

As long as it's a career you can manage you won't be the first or last to have a baby while working in public.
