Hey guys, I’m 23, recently graduated from my university (150 units) and I’m currently studying for FAR. I’m also about to being my job search which is pretty daunting to say the least. My questions is on the career path I should take, private vs. public.

I did ok in school (3.28 gpa and 2.96 acct gpa). I didn’t work as hard as I should and I regret it. I was wondering if I should get into private accounting first, since the hours are better, pass all 4 parts of the CPA exam, and then get into public. I know this is backwards, but I don’t think I could do public accounting AND study + pass all 4 parts. Is it ok if I try and get into public accounting at 24 with all 4 parts passed? Are firms going to wonder why I did this? I’m just kind of confused on what I want to do. I just want to get a job somewhere and start working. I’ve done final interviews at 2 mid tier firms and didn’t get the job which was disheartening. I feel I could go out and get a job in AP or something like that at a large company since they’re always looking for accountants.

I need some advice guys, I’m confused on what I want to do at this point. I want to get into public accounting eventually because that’s where the experience and the money come into play. So my goal is get into public accounting, but what is the best way to do it?

ALSO, what is the best ways to get in touch with the right people if I want a job? I was thinking LinkedIn as opposed to a formal application on the website which seems like a crapshoot. I’m also going to utilize the accounting services at my school which I graduated from.

Personally, I'd be interviewing for both and see what kind of offers I get before I started worrying too much about my career path.
