    Hey guys.

I recently received my CGMA wall certificate and it does look awesome. Big and professional looking.

I am looking at my name however and it has a CPA designation after my name. I wonder how this happened and if it is typical?

I recently passed the CPA exam and immediately after I applied for UAA AICPA membership and then applied and received my CGMA certificate.

I am probably one of the few that actually received a CGMA certification without actually holding the CPA license due to me still working out the experience requirements.

I wonder if it is just assumed that everyone is assumed to be a CPA or what could have caused this? Should there be any issues from this? Hopefully I soon will be licensed so it will not be an issue regardless.

If I recall correctly, when you apply for the CGMA designation you certify that you are a CPA by checking a box. I believe you have to have your license to get the CGMA designation in addition to certain management experience. But its just checking a box on the application.

The website says that there are 2 pathways. If you took the AICPA pathway you are supposed to be a licensed CPA to get the CGMA, so you basically led them to believe you were licensed, they apparently don't verify that information. This is why I feel the CGMA isn't worth the paper it's printed on, if they're not even going to verify an applicants credentials. And I don't think that even when a test is required that employers will see much value in it.

None of the descriptions does it say you need to be a licnesed cpa, just an AICPA voting member.

To be an AICPA voting member you must have passed the exam and have the required experienced but not necessarily licensed for whatever reason… in my case it was due to getting the CPA at my employment to give me a notarized signoff with his cpa number… I'm still working with the state board regarding that.

I'm going to e-mail the address provided on the website though to make sure and check.

My understanding is that cpa certification and cpa license is two different things. And my interpretation is taking the cpa exam not being licensed cpa.

Regardless I am contacting them for clarification.

Hey guys from this description below it appears to support what i thought. Passing the exam and meeting the experience requirement as well as being an a I aicpa member is required but it says nothing about being required to be licensed cpa

What are the requirements for becoming a CGMA designation holder?

“A strategic case study exam is already a requirement for those pursing the designation through Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), and starting in 2015 it will be a requirement for AICPA members who intend to obtain the designation. AICPA voting members have passed the Uniform CPA Examination, met the UAA educational requirements, and met experience requirements needed to become a CPA. An additional three years of experience in a management accounting role is required:”

Apparently, this is one of the reasons why CGMA shouldnt be given much value because it is being given away for free without any exams or experience verification. Valid and active CMAs (including me) are the ones getting disadvantaged. We are fine if there are no “free passage” to the CGMA.

I'm not convinced it's even plausible that people are just listed on certificates as being a CPA if it's not even a requirement. The other requirements you posted begin in 2015, when an exam is required.
