REG Exam today? Mine was horrific

Anyone have their reg exam today? I thought mine was extremely hard and I was pretty well prepared I thought. The MC testlets went medium, hard and not sure if it stayed hard or went back to medium. The sims though were the worst in my opinion. Becker did not prepare me well for probably 3/6 of the sims at all and the other 2, besides the research question were mentioned by them but not showed calculation wise or gone into detail. I made educated guesses on probably all of them except the research luckily. Anyone else having a similar reaction?

That's what I've been reading as well. Definitely the most discouraged coming out of an exam compared to AUD and BEC. I just wasn't expecting the sim questions because Becker barely even covered the topics in the book. Just gonna wait and hope although the wait is going to be brutal..

That's how everyone feels coming out of Reg, trust me. The sims ARE brutal and random.

Took Reg today as well, and it sounds like we had a similar experience. My sims were very tough, but fair, as the material they dealt with was covered by Becker at least in part. Still had to dig through the IRC on most of them to figure out how to approach them. I'm positive that I got at least one sim completely wrong, and probably didn't score near perfect on any of the others. I did have two fairly straightforward research questions. Although, according to Becker, since I got two research sims, only one of them is probably going to count due to one of them being a pretest question. It's a shame, because the research sims were the only 2 sims I was 100% confident on.

I also did not feel like each MC testlet got significantly more challenging as I went on, which worried me quite a bit. However, this statement from the AICPA put me at ease somewhat:

ā€œMultiple-choice testlets vary in difficultyā€”there are two levels that are labeled ā€•mediumā€– and ā€•difficult. Within the testlets, items often vary substantially in their difficulty levels, but across testlets, those labeled ā€•difficult contain harder questions on average than testlets labeled ā€•medium. Every candidate receives a medium testlet first. Succeeding testlets can be either medium or difficult, depending on a candidateā€™s performance (for more information about multi-stage testing, see FAQ #3, below). The scoring procedures take the difficulty of all questions into account so that candidates are scored fairly regardless of the difficulty of the testlets they take.ā€

Good luck to everyone else taking an exam this week!

I sat today at 9am for REG. Thought it was a bit ironic to sit for a CPA exam on April fools day…but who knows. MC's were not that bad, but much more difficult and challenging than the ones that I had practiced. SIMS, some ok, some out of this world–hated them!!!

I had a 74 in my last try, and had a major system computer, PC failure. I mean to say that I got the square on my screen on my REG exam after my MC that said “contact your system admin”!!! The prometric people had difficulty restarting my computer, got it started, then it failed, switched me to another PC then I resumed 20 minutes later. No wonder I got the 74. NASBA gave me a free ride on this one because of the issue.

Anyway, my SIMS were hard, but I hope I did well enough to pass! I prepared with Becker, Ninja notes, and the Ninja MC/SIMS. I did all the questions and re-did the ones I got wrong. I then took the practice exam and got a 92. I checked for score release dates in anticipation…5/5 is the time frame…so bummed as I want to know NOW!!!

    REG: 4/1

    FAR: late July 2015

    BEC: 78 exp; Oct 2015

    AUD: 75 exp;

** not science major– now getting second masters degree (MSA) while taking CPA >> Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA

Yeah. I have been researching the forum and found a lot of people have been sure they failed and ended up in the 80's. I know my MC got harder which is a good sign it just depends on the SIMS for me I think. They really did come out of nowhere and wasn't ready based on Becker review materials. Perhaps they are heavily curved compared to easy ones so even partial credit helps out. Anyone else have any thoughts on the reg SIMS or experiences?

I mentioned this in the REG Study thread but I really think the AICPA needs to take a review of the REG Sims. It's one thing to miss a Sim because I don't understand the concept. I'm fine with that. It's my fault and I can accept that. It's quite another to miss points on a Sim because of how poorly worded and/or vague the Sim is.

We're not asking for an easy exam. But we are asking for a fair exam.

    /rant off (again)

I thought I failed REG in January. I seriously remember starting the third MCQ testlet and thinking to myself “it doesn't really matter how I answer any of these because I'm going to have to retake this anyway.” I was shaking my head at every question and felt like I was taking the wrong exam. I felt okay about my Sims overall, but there was one that was so vaguely worded as to which limitations to disregard and which ones to include in my calculations that I just had to guess. Either I guessed right a lot of the time, or the questions that really puzzled me were pretest because I did quite well on the exam.

I agree that an easy exam is not expected, but a fair one is not too much to ask. I am not an unintelligent person. If I read through the instructions multiple times, it should be clear to me what is being requested.

You will see story after story around here where people thought they failed REG, only to find out that they passed. I made an 86, and I KNEW walking out that I had failed…and I work in tax. REG is a beast, but don't be discouraged just because it's tough. Everyone else feels the same way.

    FAR - 2/14/14 - 87 - CPAExcel and Wiley Test Bank
    BEC - 5/2/14 - 79 - CPA Excel and Wiley Test Bank
AUD - 8/28/14 - 86 - CPA Excel, Wiley Test Bank, and Ninja Notes
REG - 1/30/25 - 86 - CPA Excel, Wiley Test Bank, and Ninja Notes

    DONE!!!

Please stop this nonsense about a fair exam. AICPA has already decided that only ~50% of participants pass any given section. So people who passed just did better relative to their peers. Because… does it really take a month to grade an electronic exam?

We don't mean “fair” as it regards content difficulty (that's incredibly subjective) or scoring (no one truly knows how they go about that). We're talking about the wording of the questions. I have trouble believing the AICPA intends to be so vague that legit candidates (i.e. people who truly put in the work) can't even figure out what they're supposed to be doing. Logically, they'd want good accountants representing them and not just blind squirrels who stumbled upon a nut.

As far as how long it takes to grade the exam, it only takes a month if you take the exam early in the testing window. If you take it at the end, it only takes about 10 days. And it has probably helped far more people than it has hurt that they don't just give you a raw score when you leave the testing center and call it a day. I would imagine that the number of candidates who would get a raw score of 75 or better is less than the number who end up passing.

This exam has more to do with critical thinking and working under pressure than the content itself IMO. I have absolutely no problem believing the AICPA purposely inserts vague questions in order to hone in on one's thought process and approach in answering.

And hmm.. Takes a month if you take it early in the testing window and only takes 10 days if you take it at the end of the window… seems pretty clear to me what the AICPA doing.
