So I’m scheduled to take REG on the 11th of FEB. This will be my second attempt, my first attempt was when I graduated in 2010 and decided to take it with hardly any studying. I got a 70, but now after 5 years that 70 is looking pretty good! I’m half way done, passed FAR and BEC, and am just exhausted at this point.

I’m a newlywed and I find it so hard to sit down and study (using Becker). I also feel bad for complaining as I’m not currently working and I know candidates out there have legitimate reasons to complain, such as those working full-time jobs and caring for kids!

But is anyone else out there a newlywed and finding it difficult to just seclude yourself from your new spouse and attach yourself to Tim and Pete?!? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

When I first began studying, which was the day Busy Season ended, I was about 6 months married. It was tough. You want to spend time with your new wife/husband…maybe you just bought a house like I did and you want to do things to get it to your liking, but it all seems to get int he way of studying.

A good friend told me this parable which really helped, which I have altered just a bit.

“I was walking through the woods one day. I heard a banging sound coming from the distance. I followed the noise and eventually found where it came from. I see a man trying to chop down a tree with a large axe. Interested, as I have never witnessed this before, I decided to stay and watch. After a while, I notice the cut has not been getting any deeper.

I ask the man ‘Why does this appear to not be working?' He responds ‘I wish you could tell me! I have been trying to cut this tree for days. My wife and kids are waiting for me to come home, but this job must be done!'

I respond ‘Why don't you rest a while, then get back to it after you see them?' He replies ‘If I stop, then the work won't get done! I can't stop in the middle!'.

So I look at the tree, at his axe, then back to him. ‘But if you rest, and sharpen your axe, you can get back in. Your muscles will be rested, your axe will be sharper. You will focus better.' He turns to me and says ‘I think I'll take your advice'.

So the man left with his axe. Spent time with his family, sharpened his axe. Two days later the man returned, and he found he was much more efficient at cutting down this tree.”

    DONE!!!!

Used Becker online. Who needs a text when you can burn your eyes out staring at the screen for months on end?

"Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you're hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!"

I'm not a newlywed (married 12 years), but I do have two kids. I definitely find it hard to seclude myself from them to spent time with Tim and Pete. If this will work for you, maybe you could listen to the lectures using headphones while your spouse is sitting near you doing something of their choosing like reading a book, watching TV, playing Candy Crush, knitting….whatever. That way, it will still feel like you are spending time together.

@OnMyWay732 Thank you for sharing the enlightening story! It does carry wisdom! @agwill0928 Wow, you must have a full plate! Thank you for the suggestions but I'm the type of person who studies best in seclusion, with no distractions, unfortunately. My husband works from home so it makes it even more difficult knowing he's just in the next room! I do try to take small breaks here and there.

I wish you both the best in your journey, keep me in your prayers!!!

Maybe this will inspire you! I started studying in May '13. I have two small kids. They were 3 and 1 at the time. My goal was to finish the test then have another child. Well, I took FAR in Aug and failed with a 74. I didn't realize that you couldn't retake a section if you had a NTS for another without loosing that NTS (aka $$) so I went on and took AUD in November. I passed. I decided to take busy season off and get right back at it in April. Well…end of Feb I found out I was pregnant. So I took FAR at 37 weeks pregnant (passed) then BEC when the newborn was 2 months old (passed) and studying for my last section during busy season, with a newborn (who I have to stop and feed every 3 hours) so I don't loose credit for AUD. Oh…and all the while my husband and I are developing a new neighborhood and getting ready to build a house. All of that started prior to me being pregnant so we basically couldn't stop. So…I just wanted to throw that out there. That no matter what you have going on, if you make the time and effort you too can pass! I am REALLY ready for all this to be over, but I just keep thinking the end is near!

I started studying when my youngest child was four months old. I also had a 20 month old and a 4 year old. It was hard because I wanted to spend time with them, which was already limited because I also work full time. It took me 18 full months because I took a month off after each test to make up for time lost with my girls. I wish I had just pushed myself and sucked it up and got it done quicker. It is really easy to focus on what you are missing out on, but you should really focus on what you can do when you're done. You just have to do it. Set a study schedule and get your new husband on board. Study those set days and focus on couple time the other days. If you know you have set days with the husband and set days to study you will use your time so much more efficiently. You can do it!

I too, am in a similar situation. Not quite a newlywed, but been married 3 yrs, and just bought a house. It is definitely hard not to fix up the place to my liking. My husband has been really great either hanging out in the garage or bedroom while I take over the living room studying. My theory is: study hard and get as much done now, then when I'm done I will have lots of free time! 🙂 Good luck and power through!!
