REG – test window curve?

I thought I had read somewhere there was a particular window one should NOT take REG in because of the curve. Something to do with tax season and the tax candidates scores could really set the bar high.

Does anyone know what I’m talking about or am I imagining things? I can’t find the original topic.

    Thanks!

I don't know what you're talking about, but if it's true, I hope tax people don't usually take it in Q4.

The AICPA claims there is no curve per se on grading the exam. The point values of question are determined using statistical data from when they were pretested and other elements, but you're not graded against the other people in your exam window.

    FAR - 84 PASSED
    AUD - 93 PASSED
    REG - 84 PASSED

@ msgolds – I realize AICPA claims there is no curve. But I think there is an unwritten belief that there is indeed a curve. I think receiving score reports based on how you fare against candidates that passed the exam helps to perpetuate the idea.

@fearthebeard (nice name) – Good Luck on your REG score! I think it was with the idea that tax folks finished in April then reviewed and tested. But I can't remember if it was April/May or July/Aug. Or maybe it's based on Corporate taxes and they do in fact test in Oct/Nov… I'll keep looking.

It's probably all a myth anyways. I'll just study like I'm going up against tax pros, lol.

Honestly I think by using statistical measures to derive predetermined point values, it very closely imitates the effects of a curve. That's why I think the AICPA is probably telling the truth when they say they don't curve. If they did curve, I think the results would still be pretty similar to what they are now. I'm pretty sure that theory is an urban legend.
