Roger VS Becker for Audit Please help!

I need to decide which of the two I should use to study for Audit. I have both Becker and Roger. The problem with Becker is that is too dry when it comes to Audit and they just want you to memorize everything. They don’t give any good examples and they also pretty much tell you to highlight the main points that they dont bother explaining. Becker is great for someone with Audit experience who just wants a review course with a great test bank, and everything straight to the point. Becker is great for FAR and REG based on my prior experience. I also think Becker has the best multiple choice software system in the market where you can practice after every small section.

Roger on the other hand has great easy to understand lectures. I think Audit is Roger’s strongest subject. You can really understand Audit just by watching and taking notes from Roger’s lectures. The only two problems with Roger is that his new 2014 MC data bank is a piece of shhh. For example, you finish watching section 1 on Chapter 1, and when you start working of the MC questions, you start getting questions from stuff either he never covered on his lectures, or they belong to another section. You also get a lot of repeats. I try contacting Roger about the questions that appeared on his test bank but were never covered on the lectures or his book, and they told me that he does not go over every singe little detail, but he wants to test you on it,so you can take notes. I don’t think that is such a great idea cause your score on HW will always be very low since you are tested on material you have not read. This also worries me cause a lot of questions on the real exam might be on little details he has not covered and that could be the difference between a 74 or 75.

I have tried to use Roger for the lectures and Becker for the practice question, but I cant cause Becker goes into detail that Roger does not, so it will be impossible to follow. What do you guys think I should do? Should I just go over Becker first and Roger later? Wouldn’t that take a long time? Should i just follow Roger, and pray that the exam does not cover the detail he is not covering? Please guys, help me out here!

I have used Roger for all three parts and I passed every one of them. I like him because he's funny and keeps me awake since his lectures aren't boring. Audit was my first test and I used him and passed. Worked for me 🙂

I can't comment on Roger as I'm using Becker right now… but I would say that for something like audit, it's all about the details. As dry as it is, I would suggest you to just get through it. However, I have heard a lot of praise on the audit from Roger, but if you already have access to the Becker material, you should just go through it. I've gone through 1 round of all the chapters of audit with Becker right now and I'm going through my 2nd run. I don't think it's really all that bad, especially since you've already gone through something like FAR which has way more info.

    AUD - 95 10/2014
    REG - 87 1/22/15

Have you considered the NINJA MCQ to supplement Roger's course. I used Roger, I purchased the full course in May 2013 when it still came with the WTB, so I'm using that rather than Roger's test bank. I like Roger, but I also wasn't very happy with the test bank. I think they'll improve it over time. When I started studying with Roger the book that you can see on screen at the same time as the lecture just didn't work at all… Now it does. And the WTB wasn't compatible with tablets… I couldn't believe that. Now I think just about everything is… Those were the dark ages, 1 year ago. Lol.

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!

MrCPA511, thanks for the advice, I will try to read some of the Becker chapters at least once.

StephAV, based on your experience, you think that what Roger covered enough details on his lectures to answer the questions from Wiley test bank and Ninja questions? I see you pass Audit on your first time with a nice score. You have any Audit experience?

I passed AUD recently using Roger, and I think I got a pretty good score (the first time, when I failed, was a couple of years ago using CPAExcel, which did not click with me), but I would highly recommend supplementing with Ninja MCQ. It's only $47…Roger's homework questions on their own just don't seem tough enough.

I think you should bite the bullet and use Becker, but I'm a little biased, having only used Becker. If it helps, one of my friends who used Roger got in the mid-80s on his exam with no supplemental material.

You're right, of course — Becker is really, really, really boring. Especially for AUD. I fell asleep a few times. That said, I think Becker takes you through the audit framework in a very precise manner. It's organized neatly so that you can easily compartmentalize the facts you have to know for different topics, but you also get a good sense of the synergy that exists between topics. I hated my audit class in college (no blame on the teacher as he was great, but I struggled to grasp basic concepts) and have no audit experience, and I ended up doing very well when it was all said and done.

shankysays, you think that Roger covered enough details on his lectures to answer the ninja questions? I think Becker covered enough information on FAR to answer all ninja questions, but I don't know if that is the case for Roger.

JamesBJames, thanks for the tip, I think I might have to cover Becker first for the details and Roger right after to really understand what the hell I memorized using Becker.

Audit sucks, period. Even with Roger. That being said, I used Roger + Ninja MCQ.

Felt like I didn't know anything, but did pretty well. To be completely honest, you could probably get by doing a cram course, and then focusing on Ninja MCQs.

Audit_This, did you do lots of simulations as well? I know for FAR I got a 71 only doing MC and then an 84 when I included simulations from Gleim. Is Audit any different?

I did work in Audit for 3 years, I've been in private accounting for 6 years and out of school for 9 years… So I was able to apply some of my experience and knowledge to the exam. I feel like the lectures are a good framework. I don't pick up and recall EVERY fact after going through the lectures. So working through the MCQ's is pretty brutal. And even if I did hear and felt like I understood, for me, application of this stuff seems to be as clear as mud… On the WTB I was scoring pretty low (like failing) and just kept working on them focusing on the topics I was scoring the worst on. I was trying to get all my scores up to 75 before exam day. But I was unable to. My average was 65… I think the test banks are difficult plus hopefully you are really hitting your weak subjects hard. I read the solutions and take notes as needed.

I used Becker. I did all of the homework, all the SIMs, the optional homework, a practice test after each chapter and both final exams. I averaged low to mid 90s first time through, upper 90s on practice tests and low 90s on the finals. I also work in audit though…

    @BarceFan-

I haven't focused on sims for any of the exams. I find that doing MCQs will really help you know the material, and knowing the material is what will get you through the SIMS.

For FAR and AUD, I didn't touch sims until the morning of the exam.

I can say that with AUD, my studying from FAR combined with my work experience carried me through the sims (as well as utilizing the authoritative literature). To me, they were surprisingly easy. I actually felt guilty leaving the testing center with over 2 hours left.

At the end of the day, any review program can help you pass. You have to decide how much money you want to spend and how much time you are willing to study. My advice to anyone is avoid Becker- they are overpriced, and from my own observations, their method isn't as effective as others. I would also say not to rely on lectures alone. While I managed to pass FAR exclusively using Roger, I enthusiastically endorse the NINJA MCQs. In fact, based on all the people at my firm that keep asking what my secret is and turn to NINJA, I kind of think Jeff should throw a little REG love my way 😉 😉
