I am considering a new position with a local firm after leaving a Big Four firm and am wondering how to proceed. I have received an offer and I am wondering exactly how to approach the salary negotiations aspect of the process. They gave me an offer last week and I said I would mull it over until next week and get back to them with any questions. Does anyone have any advice on how to ask for a higher amount? Or is a signing bonus something to consider asking for? I don’t have any experience in negotiating, clearly, so any help is appreciated.
As it is, I will be getting higher comp than what I was getting with the last job, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to continue in public to begin with. I guess I’m looking for good enough incentive to keep me in the business long enough to give them a fair shot. I don’t expect promotions and raises to be as consistent as Big Four, so I’d like to start out a little higher in pay.
Lastly, they’re offering for me to start out in three months, so is it ridiculous to ask for a signing bonus to help bridge the gap in that time? And can you think of anything awesome for me to do this summer, considering I’ve done a lot of international travel in the last few months?!
