I could use some advice. I work for a publicly traded company as a staff accountant right now. I was approached today about the possibility of taking a position as the SEC Reporter since ours left last July.

Has anyone here worked with SEC reporting as your full time job? I am fairly familiar with what the job entails since I have helped out a bit over that’s year, but does anybody work in reporting full time? What do you think of it?

I have not worked in SEC reporting.

However I feel like it is great experience and a VERY marketable skillset. I definitely think the jump from a GL staff accountant type role to an SEC Reporting role would look fantastic on your resume. I'd definitely do it.

I've interviewed for SEC reporting gigs, and they seem great for a number of reasons. But these roles do tend to work more hours around period ends than your typical accounting gig, especially if you are now going to be the sole SEC Reporting Accountant. My guess, you will work more hours but you will also get more exposure to the business and to upper management.

I am currently working for a big pharma company as a SEC Reporting manager. Being a SEC accountant is a lot of work. During non-qtr, I will read all the competitors' filings to see how they disclose certain items and compare it to my own. I will also do research on GAAP disclosures.

During the qtr end, the consolidation team will be busy for the first week or so but after that the I will be busy until the filing day. I collect information from other departments and make sure the information make sense and also deal with the external auditors on a daily basis. We also do the XBRL tagging on our own, so that will keep me busy as well.

The downside for the job is, during the qtr/yr end, you will stay at work longer than others in the financial reporting team. Last 2 weeks, I havent left work before 11pm from Monday to Thursday. It is a challenging job. But the upside is, I deal with controller, asst. controller on a daily basis.

    Hope this will help.
