Some parting words

I’m not really one of the people with the highest post count on this forum, but I’ve been a part of the community for almost a year now. Now that I’ve finished the exam, I don’t plan on returning very often. However, I know that I benefited quite a bit from the experience and advice of those who passed before me, who stuck around on this forum, so since I won’t be around much, I wanted to leave with some parting words of advice for those still pressing on towards finishing this exam.

First to Jeff – You’ve got a great thing going here. Keep it up! You offer what most review courses don’t – hope! Eventually I think your website will help more people pass the CPA exam than Becker or Roger or any other group or organization.

And to you candidates – most of this advice comes from having watched so many of you great people struggle with this test. I speak generally, so you’ll have to decide what applies to you:

    1. When you commit to take this exam and PASS it, you need to commit to make the sacrifices necessary to make that happen. There are things in your life that you’ll have to cut out for a short while. Learn to make those sacrifices. Those things will all be waiting for you when you’re done. And they’ll be so much sweeter!

    2. Don’t ever make excuses for why you didn’t prepare enough. I see too many people on here making excuses, instead of facing up to their own shortcomings. Own this exam, and organize your life in such a way that you won’t have to make excuses. Remember that people with FAR greater barriers and challenges than you have passed this exam.

    3. Before you start learning the material, you need to learn HOW YOU LEARN BEST. Some people learn best through textbooks and lectures, some people don’t. You shouldn’t feel like you have to follow someone else’s study program in order to pass. I credit most of my success to stuff you can buy dirt cheap on this website – The Wiley testbank, the Ninja notes, and the Ninja audio. Everything you need to pass is in there. I never watched a single lecture, or read a single chapter in a book. So find what works best for you and go with that all the way to the finish line.

    4. You don’t have to be super intelligent, or the greatest college grad, or even a good test-taker to pass. You just need to work hard enough. For some of the more gifted people, maybe they don’t have to work all that hard. But if you’re like me, you have to work yourself into the ground most days. Be willing to do that.

    5. Don’t leave your exam score up to luck! Beat the living daylights out of the material — prepare yourself in such a way that you can’t possibly fail, no matter what questions you happen to draw out of the hat on the day of your exam.

Best wishes to you all, and adieu!
