Staff to Senior salary bump?

    I realize it depends on the size of the firm and market, but what should a future senior accountant expect for a salary increase (%) after being promoted from staff level?

    I received a 6.5% bump on a very very generous staff auditor salary.

    I am in internal audit…not sure if that would make a difference.

    When I went from Staff (not a generous staff salary) to Senior for a medium sized company (industry accounting, not public) I received a 10% salary increase.

    @smp,

    What is generous? I work in internal audit at a university and pay is well below average I think. I am up for a promotion from staff to senior and am clueless about what is a fair bump since none of the other seniors are CPAs. Just managers, directors and CAE have their licenses…any input would be great.

    They brought me in as a staff auditor at the equivalent of a low senior salary with the agreement I would have my CPA in three years. It was a $22k increase over my staff accountant salary in public. I am well over $60K a year right now…which for my area is very nice.

    @smp73 – that's great. Good for you.

    I'm surprised to see that some people were promoted to senior before completing the exam, it is a requirement at my firm – no matter how good you are.

    smp – that explains all the Anne Taylor 😉

    smalltime – I'm not in public. But my promotion came after I had worked too many months of ungodly hours and really impress the owner (not my supervisor). Then they hired 2 staff to help me out. They don't answer to me, but it really helped with the hours.

    There is only one other Senior and she has her CPA, as does everyone above us. The staff acct'ts (now 3) aren't even working towards it. It'll probably dawn on them, like it did me, that to advance the 3 letters really are needed. By then they'll be married with kids and trying to do it the hard way. I'm trying to convince them to do it now, but they just don't care. Youngins.

    I think if you go industry right out of college, you are less likely to get your CPA right away. But that's just from what I see.

    Which is all completely off topic (sorry!) and now I'm rambling just so I don't have to study, lol. Back to the books!

    Yes…MCLKT the Ann Taylor addiction came with the new job. 🙂

    Sounds like you are on the road to even more success. Congrats on impressing the owner. I have no doubt you are a fantastic accountant! Go you!

    Anne Taylor? All I know is she owns some loft.. Okay, but another question related to experience. So I did an internship in Industry in an accounting department for 8 months and start my job as a Audit Associate in public for a medium size firm on June 3rd. I live in MN so the experience requirement is 1 year but does anyone know if you can combine the experience? So I could work for 4 months at my new job and meet the experience requirement? I tried looking on my State Societies website but didn't' find any determinative answer.

    I work for one of the big 4. I got a 10% increase on from my staff 1 to staff 2 year and I expect at least that much this year when I am promoted to senior.

    FAR - passed, 11/12
    AUD - passed, 5/13

    Wanted to bump this thread as I know many of the big firms give out promotions this time of year.

    I received about a 13% increase from Staff II to Senior (audit) in a large firm in NYC area. I thought this was very generous.

    Can anyone else provide the % increase you received from staff II to senior? Just trying to gauge if mine was typical or very generous!! Sharing salary % increases will help us all!! Most firms discourage transparency so those of us getting screwed won't really know it.

    Thanks!
