Staying Motivated in a Job You Don't Like

Long story short… I was desperate to get out of public accounting because I traveled so frequently. I had been in public accounting for 2 years and I took an internal audit job at a large company and have been there for 8 months. It’s a lot less travel (3-4 trips per year) and no stress whatsoever. My position in the department is new & quite frankly, I’m not sure why they felt like they needed another person in the department because there’s just not enough work. My workload depends on other people unloading some of their’s onto me, and my coworkers just don’t seem all that willing to do that because they enjoy what they are working on. On top of not having much to do work wise, I don’t feel like I fit well into the department. My coworkers and I get along and work together just fine but they’re much older than I am and it’s just a lot different than what I was expecting. I had been interviewing for a financial analyst position & even though they basically told me that I was going to be given an offer, they told me today that it was given to an internal candidate. I have tried talking to my manager and telling him that I need more work but he kind of blew me off & just talked over me and told me not to worry about it and that “I’m doing everything right” but is also doing some projects that I could easily do without any direction, but I don’t know that they exist or need to be done until I see that he has done them. He consistently tells me that I do a good job on the things that I have done (various walkthroughs, testing, etc) but seems reluctant to give up things that he has worked on for years, even though it means that I am only busy 30% of the time. Anyways, I just need a little motivation & advice on how to deal with this, without coming across as being “bored” which obviously looks bad (even though I am SUPER bored!).

Also, I have thought very hard about leaving this job. I was very close to going back to my old firm but came to my sense and realized I had left because of the travel and that the travel wasn't going to improve. And like I already stated, I applied and interviewed for a financial analyst position. I have also thought about just trying to transfer to a different department such as finance.

Definitely use the down time to study and pass. See if you can bug your manager about software training, as internal audit has different kinds of software to spot trends and patterns, i.e. ACL. And if you aren't already an Excel expert, there's also tons of Excel functions that are used as a last resort in internal audit, which are also helpful in financial analysis.

    Couldn't pass again!

Speaking of excel any one have or know of a good online training course for excel. I work with excel, but like @mustpass I too am in a position that doesn't keep me busy all of the time and worse it's one where I have to “figure it out” on my own. Thus I have to train myself on a lot of things.

Yes, use this time to improve your skills! You are working on FAR it looks like… STUDY!

I've been out of public accounting for 5 years now and I've come to beleive there is a different kind of busy at least where I work. Lol. I just started working on the exam again, after 7 years off from studying and I'm able to spend time studying at work just about everyday. When I first started I'd go to my boss and say “is there anything else I can help with?” quite often. One day she walked me back to my office and said “look this is the internet browser.” Lol. Alrighty then… That is what everyone is doing? Okay… Good to know.

I'd pass the exam, get licensed and if you still aren't happy, by all means start looking!

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.

Good to know that you are going through something similar, I am also going to work with limited tasks on my todo. Just waiting to pass two more parts, and waiting for my one-year experience sign-off and then hopefully that will give me better leverage for a more rewarding job. Drives me crazy sometimes, at my old company I worked at a minimum of 10 hours a day everyday – thus I chose to leave. My current job pays more and I would be lucky to have 3 hours of work in a day. Just hang in there!
