What steps would you recommend taking before leaving public accounting? I have 6 years public accounting experience and my CPA license but am burned out (correct word choice?).

I loved my prior public accounting job but was laid off in 2010. The job I took after that in a moment of desperation was a huge mistake and if I’d been employed would’ve never taken it.

Is there any other steps you’d recommend taking before transitioning into industry or working for a government agency?

wait….do you work in public accounting now or not? Kinda confused.

If so, in what capacity? What type of firm is it (large, regional, small, etc.).

Sorry for the confusion! I loved my prior public accounting job but the current one has taken any love for it away. I thought it was just burnout but I'm leaning towards leaving public altogether and going in a different direction. This past season, we worked 70 hours per week from mid-January until this past week. Some of the demanding clients are on my nerves and I've been getting fed up for the past 2 years.

I think it's time to consider moving into industry or to a university, etc.

I left public accounting after two years because it was not my cup of tea, to put it mildly. I chose to go into industry as an internal auditor, mainly so that I could springboard for IA into something else in a few years. IA is a great department to go into to meet the “higher-ups” in the company and to also get to know the ins and outs. I've met so many more people and done many more things than had I gone straight into the finance department.

AUD: PASSED [81]; Expired, retaking August 23rd
BEC: PASSED [83]; Expired, retaking July 11th
    REG: PASSED [83]
FAR: FAILED [64]; Retaking May 23rd
