Study Materials

    Hi all,

I have been lurking the forums for awhile and decided it’s time to get in on the action!

I am taking FAR on 8/28 and have only been using Roger CPA materials thus far. Has anyone else relied exclusively on Roger or any other study material for FAR or any other sections? I am thinking of getting the NINJA audio and MCQ for supplementation. Part of me wants to purchase the entire NINJA 10-point combo, but I don’t foresee myself needing further material for BEC or AUD (I work in audit) so it wouldn’t justify the expense.

This is a stressful boat to be in–please share your thoughts!

    AUD-74,88
    BEC-89
    REG-72,82

I had to respond because I am also a Hokie class of 2013. Will your employer pay for Becker? I have not used any other study materials, but I did end up with an 87 on FAR. I had the intermediate accounting textbook used at VT and I supplemented any info I didn't understand in becker with that. I just took BEC and will find out my score at the end of the week. The Becker material for BEC was great, I just tried to take it in 3 weeks so idk how it will turn out. I take audit on the 9th, and Becker has been spot on. If your employer wont pay for it, they do 18 month 0% financing. Also, if you know anyone who works for a government agency, they can get it for like 2k instead of 3ish.

Its always a good plan to supplement your course with a test bank (Ninja MCQ). I went with Wiley when I originally started out, but back in early 2013 Wiley was several hundred dollars cheaper.

I enjoyed the Ninja Audio because it provided me with another perspective that Roger missed out on (I use Roger as well).

    Good Luck!

I would supplement with Ninja audio first – it gives you a chance to do other things while studynig and it might bring up a few things in a different way or something you just need to say out loud a few times. It might be a good indicator as to whether or not Roger is sufficient.

I use Becker and if i could commit enough time to drilling it in and acing HW and exams before taking them (but who has time for that?!) it is definitely worth it.. all of the AICPA released questions I've already seen in Becker. I also like to do a Gleim practice exam to get another confidence boost/CRUSHer. They're $30 which isn't bad if you're just supplementing.

I was at the end of my journey when the MCQ and books were released for Ninja so can't vouch for these materials.

I have this problem where I am completely obsessed with the exam. It's hard for me to focus at work because all I can think about is studying. I spend more time lurking on the CPA Exam forum than on my work email. I'm turning into one of those annoying people who always says I can't do dinner or hang out because I have a budgeted study time that I must keep up with. I dream about something related to the exam at least every other night–it's haunting me! Haha, does anyone else relate?

@hokie2: Let's go, Hokies!! I just graduated this past spring with my MBA. I have Tech withdrawals daily.

My employer does pay for Becker classes but I didn't realize this until I started work (July 10th) and I had already purchased Roger in June. I'm going to stick it out with Roger–I really like his lectures but I've heard his MCQ are spotty. I'm going to combat this by getting the Ninja MCQ once I'm done with the foundational lectures. If I fail FAR more than twice, I'll consider Becker in the future since it's covered. Let's hope that doesn't happen though haha.

87 on FAR your first time…that's quite an accomplishment, congrats! Hopefully I'll share your feeling next month. I haven't taken any intermediate classes in about 4 years so I am re-learning a lot, but luckily I took governmental last semester so that should be clutch!

@agentjohnny: I just purchased the NINJA audio yesterday and I'm planning on getting the MCQ once I get through Roger's lectures. Sounds like we're following the same process—how is it working out for you?

@jpowell31: Jeff's sample of NINJA audio made me buy it. My 20 minute commutes to work and back are no longer going to be wasted time. 3 hours+ a week adds up!

I've said a few times here that getting obsessed is the way to pass this exam, so consider that a good thing! And it sounds like you've got a plan in place– a schedule, and then sticking to it. I think that's the way to do this.

I also really like the Ninja Audio– that's great that you got that. And a test bank– that's another must-have.

You've got a solid approach, which generally yields good results!

    AUD 84 (1/9/14-Wiley books/TB + free materials)
FAR 83 (5/21/14-the above + NINJA 10 Pt Combo Lite)
    REG 84 (7/9/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC/Notes)
    BEC 76 (10/5/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC)

Disclaimer: My ninja avatar is not meant to imply that I have any affiliation with this site other than being a forum member. That's a pic of a T-shirt that my daughter gave me for my birthday. 🙂
