Stuggling with FAR, should I change methods?

Currently, I am going through the CPAexcel lectures and MCQ. But there is just so much of it that it doesn’t seem like I’m retaining any information. Also, I scheduled the exam on May 31, cause I want to take a chance at this exam this quarter to see what it’s like, and then take it for real on July 11. But honestly, given by the way I’m retaining information (or not retaining information), staying with this plan for another month and a half does not seem it’s going to help. Should I just plan to take the exam for real on May 31 and just switch to Jeff’s 20 day method?

I think you should wait until July instead of taking it just to see what the test is like, but if you are definitely going to sit in May regardless, then give yourself the best chance possible and study like it's the “real” shot. FAR is a beast, but it's doable. You may be retaining more than you think. Have you gotten through all of the material at least once?

Not even close lol. There is so much material for CPAexcel, and if I were to cover it all as originally planned, I would not be done until June 5, 2014.

I would study it thoroughly and take your time with the exam. There is no sense in studying it quickly just to take it, only to waste another 2 months to review it thoroughly. Your time is much better spent thoroughly reviewing now and then sitting July 1st or so, (hopefully pass), but if you don't pass you can at least take it again in another window.

    AUD: DONE
    FAR: DONE
    BEC: DONE
    REG: DONE

IM GOING TO BE A CPA!!!!!

Thanks for the feedback guys. I guess I'll stick with the original goal of preparing to take it in July 11. However, I am planning to also take it on May 31. My chances of passing on May 31 is kind of iffy, but nonetheless, I still want to give it a shot this quarter, and to see what the exam is like. In that regard, the exam fees is a small price to pay for valuable experience and insight.

I don't understand. You have a grade next to FAR already. Haven't you seen the test before? If you're going to try to sit in May then at least make sure you know IFRS and government.

Yup, I have taken FAR before, about a year ago. The reason I am taking it on May 31 is because it seems that the key formula to passing for me is to get mad. That is what got me a pass in BEC. And that is what I am hoping will get me a pass in REG (score release can't come soon enough). If I take it in May 31, I most likely will not be able to cover everything by that time. So if by some off chance I pass, great. But if I fail, then that will make me pissed, knowing that I fought a battle without covering everything, which will then give me the drive to go all out for the exam on July 11, 2014, as I had originally intended. So in short, it seems that I can't pass FAR unless I go all out, and this will help me do just that.

And I'll move around the order of topics I'm covering, so that I'll be able to cover IFRS and government before May 31, and still be able to cover everything by June 6, as originally intended.

IMO, your method wastes a whole lot of time and effort…but whatever floats your boat I guess.

All I know is, if you do go with your plan, you ,MUST make sure you follow through with your study plan after May 31st or else you REALLY would've wasted you time.

    Good luck!
