4 weeks? 6weeks? just wondering...
Depends on your state. It can take from a couple of weeks to 3 or 4 months. You need to ask people from your state. What state are your from? I am from Indiana and it took 11 days from the date I mailed to get my license number. But Indiana is probably an exception and not the normal.
I sent mine in around Sept 20th and it was approved at the Oct 18th Board meeting. In MN it depends on the timing of when everything is received and when the next board meeting is.
Anyone know the time table for WA state? I just ordered my Ethics Exam (last week) and the AICPA website still says my order is pending. What the heck?
I did hear to wait until Jan to submit my paperwork to the Board of Accountancy because your CPE schedule depends on what year you officially get licensed. So, if I turned it in and it got approved in Dec, I would basically have to do 3 years of CPE in 2 calendar years. So, I am waiting until Jan 2nd to mail my paperwork.
@kaaCPA - Are you sure about that? Does that vary by state? I talked to someone from the California Board of Accountancy and she said that my CPE is prorated depending on when I got my license and when my birthday is (the renewal date is the last day of the month of the month you are born in). I only have to do 60 hours of CE before 7/31/13. Also, when they say "one year" they mean 12 months from when you got your license.. not by the end of the current year.
Oh and in response to the original poster - I think it took me about 6 weeks to get approved.
@kandisjoy - i think it varies by state.
From the Washington State BOA website: Your first CPE reporting period is from the date the Board issues your license to December 31st of the year before your license expires. During this period, you are required to complete 120 CPE credit hours which is limited to 24 hours in non-technical subject areas and including 4 hours in Board approved ethics and regulations applicable to the practice of public accounting in Washington State.
The timing of your license application is up to you. However, the later you submit your license application during the year, the shorter your first CPE reporting period becomes. Via http://www.cpaboard.wa.gov/CertificateLicense/cpeFirstReporting.shtml
Hawaii candidate here. I took my final part and passed in May 2011, still have not been licensed. Received two notices from the local board of accountancy that my work experience need to be reverified, as it was private experience. It is frustrating because they list the requirements to include private, but if they only wanted public they should just say so. I am starting to think getting the license is another layer of difficulty, and at least with the exam you have a bit more control over the process.
Ny...three weeks after they received form 4 and form 4b. Pretty quick turn around time when they had everything together
I am a recent graduate in ny and dont have a year of work under my belt yet. When I finish passing all parts around April do I apply for my license right away or do I need to wait a year to get the experience and then apply for the license?
Does the year of experience start after you pass your last part or can you use work experience from the previous year?
@james - I know in WA you can use experience you obtained prior to passing the exam. Not sure what the NY rules are.
Anyone from TN can tell me how long it takes? I sent mine in this week and I need those 3 letters behind my name ASAP. I want to apply for a job but they require the license.
@kandisjoy,
I went to the California State Board website lookup and I typed in kandisjoy and I couldn't find you? Are you sure you're licensed? (-:
Hey Haze! Long time no see.
Yes I'm sure. ;-) Unfortunately the website doesn't work unless you put in a last name, I guess. Try looking up license #113755.
I really hate that the CBA website lists our full addresses on there... Does everyone's state board do that?
Ny doesn't only city ...I think the irs does if you sign up for TPIN, so gay
kandisjoy,
Why r u on probation already in shasta lake? just kidding. Congrats on getting your license last month! I just sent my apt in today and get not wait to see that certificate.
HAZE,
Can you just put an asterik/note on your resume, "completed all requirements for CPA certification and am awaiting
my license". I am wondering if I go to an interview and the prospective employer wants proof before receiving my certificate if can get some letter verifying completion from the IL board of examiners. I know somewhere in one of the posts someone said you get sent a letter saying congrats you have passed all 4 parts, blah blah.
OLE_WILLBE_CPA2,
I actually have that on my resume. Surprisingly it hasn't helped much. Some recruiters that contacted me didn't even notice it. I think you really need the three letters behind your name. They're so many position becoming available but they require a CPA. I called TN yesterday. They've had my paperwork since Monday but still say they don't have it. Doesn't make sense. They said it comes to them after the cashier receives the money order but does it really take that long?!
Everytime I pass a part I add it to my resume. My thought is it certainly can't hurt your chances of finding a job. One recruiter told me firms don't care if you have parts passed (He is totally wrong and was a complete jerk to begin with), while others notice and say it's great. Have I gotten interviews just based on the fact that I have two parts passed? No. But has it helped my chances? I think so.
I think the main thing you are conveying when you have it on your resume is that you are actively pursuing it and are succeeding. Plus if you ever need an excuse as to a period of unemployment you can say you were studying for the exam.
Another tip I have is if you have done any volunteering, put it on your resume under a special heading like volunteerism. I think employers like to see it. If you have parts passed and volunteer and you are compared against someone who has great grades and nothing else, I think it makes a big difference.
@james,
I know my resume saying I am pursuing my CPA helped me get my job. It was actually a requirement but they saw I was pursuing and had passed 2, they gave me a chance.
Hi Kandisjoy:
I mailed out my application to the CBA on Tuesday (and my boss mailed out the attest experience certificate the same day).
When should I expect to have the license number?
I'm shooting for the end of January...is that realistic?
@OLE_WILLBE_CPA2 - lol, what can I say, I work fast. Already gettin' myself into trouble.
@italianCPA - I think that is realistic. It took me about 5 weeks to get my license. I sent everything in on 9/29 and my license was issued on 11/7.
@ HazeEastwood
I found out I passed my last test on Sept 17th. I received my congratulatory letter in the mail in October saying that they have received all my scores. The letter also stated that I need to take the ethics exam (which I had already completed) and that once they receive that score they will send the application packet. I received the application packet sometime in the first week or so of November. I filled it out & sent it back in the next day. I had also already gotten the experiece application filled out & sent in before I received my application. I received my license # around the 2nd week of December. SO in total about 2.5 months. I am still waiting on my wall certificate, they stated that it could take a few more months for me to receive this. Hope this helps & Congrats!
CPA2010TN, how long did it take from the time they got your application until they actually approved your license? I looked on the website and I have a license ## but it says the application is in process
@Haze
Around 3-4 weeks. I also watched my bank account closely and when my check cleared for my license, I knew they had definetely received my application! I did the same as you and watched online to see when it was updated. It will change to Active Fully Licensed, before you receive anything in the mail from them.
PA told me 4-6 weeks. I mailed my application and fee on 11/30. They deposited my check 12/8. Hopefully I only have a couple more weeks left to wait.
Anyone else from PA waiting?
