Lucky for me, my Prometric center was open today after being closed for 3 days due to the hurricane. At first, I was hoping they’d be open on my test day. While my wish came true, I now wish they were closed. This test was a nightmare. I’ve gone over EVERYTHING in the Wiley book and everything Phil Yaeger highlighted. About 70% of the material I painstakingly studied were not on the freakin’ test!! I had to stop for a moment to wonder if I was even taking the right exam. About half of my multiple choice questions came out of left field. However, my Simulations weren’t so bad, which is something not many people here said. It was the mutiple choice that I found difficult. And I don’t even know if the testlets got harder. All 3 Multiple Choice testlets were extremely hard, IMHO. I’m so screwed. Here I was studying for 300 hours and I’m probably going to end up with a nice big fat 50!!! I’m so depressed. I don’t understand why the CPA exam is like this. It’s supposed to be on material that’s covered in the Wiley book. But it looks like they are testing on material that Wiley and Yaeger didn’t even cover.

In order to pass this, I’d either have to be one heck of a lucky guy or there’s going to be a nice big curve. But I seriously doubt this will happen. So, I’m expecting to have to retake REG. I’m at a loss for words right now. I don’t even know if any additional studying would’ve helped. I’m so annoyed. This is ridiculous!!

Sorry, I just had to vent.

hmmmm……I'm not a fan of finishing REG quickly. If the test is difficult, 3 hours is a lil short for REG in my opinion. AUD is the only one I feel like you can finish in a short amount of time and still have done well. I just don't see that for REG

Sure — Focus on Individual Taxation, Partnership Taxation, Gift and Estate Taxation, C and S Corp Taxation, Contract Law under Common Law and UCC, Sales Contracts, Negotiable Instruments, Bankruptcy, Corporate Forms, and Agency Law. Lol basically, any topic disclosed as a tested topic by the AICPA.

@haze – I'll be sure to let you know how it goes. Pretty sure I snuck in there with a passing score.

Funny, I was thinking along similar lines 🙂

“It's supposed to be on material that's covered in the Wiley book. But it looks like they are testing on material that Wiley and Yaeger didn't even cover.”

No, Wiley and Yaeger are supposed to cover material that's on the exam

valueofnothing I think I know what you mean the Wiley book doesn't not cover the ancillary material as good as Becker Ive noticed and Yeager doesn't really talk about it.

FAR: 7/17/10 missed exam FML reschedule 8/29/10-77 EPIC!
    REG: 5/31/11-73 SMH, 8/31/11-85
    BEC: 4/15/10-72 : retake 10/3/10-80
    AUD: 11/28/10-74, 02/27/11-71 FML, 8/1/11-80
    Ethics 10/22/22-80, retake 11/28/11 - 88

Hey guys. I'm new to this forum. I'm taking REG tomorrow for the first time and I am incredibly nervous. I am scoring in the low 70's on Becker. This is definitely going to be tough.

@valueofnothing- After looking over the content specification, I finally see what the issue is. Yaeger and Wiley seem to have omitted a lot of the stuff outlined in the Content Specification. I may have to invest in a different review book as I think Wiley was too light and vague at a lot of topics that were tested. This is not good!!!

Sorry if this is such a dumb question, but what do you guys mean by “ancillary material?”

@CPAMan — Becker designates certain topics as “ancillary material” which they feel has a low probability of being tested on the exam. For example, in Becker's REG review, they designate things like Tax Return Preparer Standards and Treasury Department Circular 230 Rule as ancillary material. Becker recommends reading ancillary topics once and “whatever sticks, sticks” lol.

“I didn't say never tested, I said lower probability of being tested.” lol

@BaseballCPA- Thanks! I'll probably invest in the Becker book if I end up failing REG. There were a lot of questions I got that Wiley and Yaeger didn't cover or barely covered.

i was just being kind of a dick/pointing out the need to write precisely to accurately convey meaning/making a point that we all (myself included) probably put too much faith into review programs.

on a side note, the low-budg (well, free, thanks to my employer) CPAexcel has actually surprised me and I felt like it did a good job of touching on most topics ive seen so far (reg, bec, aud). sims/BEC writing prep left something to be desired but at least if i failed the tests i can be mad at myself for underpreparing instead of hating my review program for not being thorough enough.

    REG - 81
    BEC - 88
    AUD - 85
    FAR - 81
